Tips and Tricks to Get Kids Moving Throughout the Day
1. Lead students in a brain break or energizer when changing subjects. These short movement breaks are a great way to use up some extra energy so kids are ready to learn.
2. Teach a standing lesson. Have students stand up while they're listening to a lesson. Research has shown that standing increases focus and improves retention of new facts.
3. Integrate physical activity into lesson plans. Teach kids dance moves from a historical period or have them solve math problems to determine how many jumping jacks they should do.
4. Encourage active play at recess. Help students organize a game of tag or organize them into teams for a relay race.
5. Start the day with a stretch. Have students stand up and stretch or march in place during the morning announcements or while you're taking attendance.
"The science is clear. Physical activity does more than create good health. It contributes to leadership, productivity and innovation. It lowers depression and crime, increases educational achievement and income levels, and generates returns to businesses."
