Close reading is an important strategy for reaching the Common Core standards, especially with the integration of complex informational texts. Close reading focuses on multiple readings of the same text, with guiding questions, discussions, and collaboration to help students gain a deeper understanding of the text.
The following resources were shared by Silvia Dorta-Duque de Reyes at the 2014 Side by Side trainings and provide teachers with background information and a structure for scaffolding this strategy for all levels of English Language Learners. The scaffold provides instructional tips for the first, second, and third reading before, during, and after reading. The one page scaffold support is a great classroom reference tool for all grade levels!
