Steps for a Successful Transistion

On Your OLD Laptop

1. Weed out old files.

   • Throw away files you will never need again.

2. Export Bookmarks from your web browsers.

   • Safari, Firefox, Chrome

3. Back up your files

• 1. Copy files that you want to keep.

     • Documents Folder Items

     • Desktop Items

     • Downloads Folder Items

     • iPhoto - Photos from previous classes

     • iTunes - Audio files

     • iMovie - Projects & Events 

• • Manually

  • - or - 

  • Using Time Machine

4. Deauthorize iTunes and Audible Accounts

5. Unlink Dropbox account (if you have one).

On Your NEW Laptop

1. Import Bookmarks from your web browsers.

   • Safari, Firefox, Chrome

2. Copy files over to new laptop.

   • Manually

     1. Drag files to the new computer. (Same locations as the old computer.)

     2. *Located in: Macintosh HD↦Users↦Yourname

        • Documents folder

        • Downloads folder

        • Desktop folder

        • Movies Folder

        • Music Folder

        • Pictures folder

USING A TIME MACHINE BACKUP...

1. Import Bookmarks from your web browsers.

   • Safari, Firefox, Chrome

2. Copy files over to new laptop.

• 1. Do Not Use Migration Assistant

• • Using Time Machine

    1. Plug in the external drive to the new computer.

    2. Open the external drive and navigate to:

    3. - Backups

    4.   - Old Computer Name 

    5.     - Latest

    6.       - Macintosh HD 

    7.         - Users 

    8.           - Select the username that was used on the old computer.

    9. * You should see all the user's files here.

    10. Drag files to the new computer. (Same locations as the old computer.)

    11. *Located in: Macintosh HD↦Users↦Yourname

        • Documents folder

        • Downloads folder

        • Desktop folder

        • Movies Folder

        • Music Folder

        • Pictures folder
