Beginning in the 2025–2026 school year, all California local educational agencies (LEAs) are required to annually screen students in kindergarten through grade two for the risk of reading difficulties using a California Department of Education (CDE)-approved screening instrument, as mandated by California Education Code Section 53008.
Purpose of the Screening: Detect students who may be at risk for reading challenges early in their educational journey.
Screening Tool: mClass DIBELS 8, a research-based screening tool that was adopted by our Board of Education in June 2025.
Areas Assessed: Basic early literacy skills in the following measures designed to identify early indicators of reading delays: phonological awareness, alphabetic principle/phonics, word reading, reading fluency, and reading comprehension.
Targeted Support: Provide timely, evidence-based interventions to improve literacy outcomes for students identified as at risk.
