Faculty Workloads and contracts
The workload may consist of four parts: Teaching, Research, Service, and Other (i.e., administration, special assignment, sabbatical). Full-time faculty are responsible for 30 workload units per academic year.
A Tri-Partite faculty workload must include Teaching, Research and Service components
A Bi-Partite faculty workload must include Teaching and Service or Research and Service
Every faculty is required to have an approved workload before being issued a contract for the upcoming year.
If faculty has a joint appointment, the workload and contract must be approved by the CLA Dean and the Dean or Director of the other unit.
Types of Workloads
Academic Year - for the traditional 9-month academic year contract
-Full-time faculty = 30 WL units
-Considered a primary assignment
Overload - for anything over 30 WL units (credit or non-credit) within the 9-month academic year
-Considered an overload assignment with a separate job setup and PCN
Summer - for any work (credit or non-credit) done over Summer. A Summer workload is up to 10 workload units or 1/3 of the 9-month base salary. Any summer assignments require a summer assignment workload and a separate contract.
-Considered a secondary assignment with a separate job set up and PCN
Workloads - General Process
Effective AY24-25 all faculty workloads are to be completed in Airtable
March 1 - Faculty must submit workload proposal to the Department Chair
April 1 - The Department Chair must submit all faculty workload proposals to the Dean for review
When are revisions to a workload needed?
A workload is considered a revision only after the initial workload proposal has been approved and signed by the department chair and Dean and now requires changes.
Revision to a workload may be needed due to changes in the course offerings in the department or student mentoring, or unanticipated service or administrative activities of the individual. When such changes occur, a request to modify the workload assignment should be forwarded through the Chair for the Dean's approval.
Revisions to the original workload must be approved by the department chair and dean electronically. The Provost's Office does not allow manual handwriting on a workload. A revised contract letter and job form will be prepared if needed.
