A companion to Developmental Biology, Eighth Edition

by Scott F. Gilbert, published by Sinauer Associates

ABOUT THIS WEBSITE

This website provides a wealth of additional material to accompany the textbook. Much of the content is referenced in the textbook; both within the text and listed on the endpapers (with the exception of material that is added after publication of the textbook). As the site is a continuously growing resource, check back regularly to see what new material has been added.

For more about the website, go to the About This Website page.

USING THIS WEBSITE

The Main Page

From the main page, the contents of the website can be accessed either by chapter, or by topic.

To access contents by chapter, choose a chapter from the chapter menu. You will be taken to a page listing all the topics for that chapter. Click a topic title to go to that topic. You will then be taken to a page listing the articles for that topic (or, if there is only one article for that topic, you will go directly to that article). Click the title of an article to go to view it. Or, click the "Expand Topics" link to expand the list to show all the articles within each topic. Then click an article title to open it.

To access a specific topic directly from the main page, enter a topic number in the "Topic Number" field, and click "GO."

To see a list of all topics in all chapters, choose "Contents for all chapters" from the chapter menu. Click "Expand Chapters" to see a list with all topics, and click "Expand Topics" to see a list with all articles.

The "Bioethics" button will take you to a page that lists all the bioethics articles (which are labeled as such in the list on the endpapers of the textbook and in their references throughout the text.)

The "Humor" button will take you to a page of developmental biology humor, including song lyrics, abstracts from papers, and even a play.

Use the search engine to search the website for a particular topic or term. Enter text in the field, and click the "GO" button. Or, click the word "SEARCH" to go to the search page, which has more detailed instructions and search options. Once you perform a search, you will be taken to the search results page, which lists all articles that contain the search terms. Click an article to open it, and scroll down through the text of the article—the search terms will be highlighted.

The Article Page

Once within an article page, scroll down to read the text. To open an image (figure, table, or photo) in its own window, click on the image. (This can be useful for printing individual images, and some images open at a larger size, which can make it easier to read small type in the image.)

At the top of every article page are links to Search, Topic Number, Bioethics, Help, and the chapter menu. At any time, you can click one of these links, or choose a new chapter from the chapter menu to move to a different part of the website.

The "breadcrumb" line at the top of the article text keeps track of where you are in the site, and is an easy way to get back to a chapter list or the main page. The breadcrumb line looks like this:

HOME :: CHAPTER 2 :: IMMORTAL ANIMALS :: CHEATING DEATH

Click the topic title, chapter title, or "Home" link to move back up the hierarchy.

PRINTING

To facilitate printing, the site has a "Printable Version" link that presents the article in a window that does not have the graphical interface elements. This makes printing faster, and fills more of the page with the text of the article.

(Note: You can print articles from their main pages (with top and sidebar graphical interface elements showing), but results may not be optimal. Some browsers may clip the right side of the page slightly, causing words to be cut off or left off entirely.)
