Elephant Seal Colony at Piedras Blancas, California

In November 1990 a dozen northern elephant seals came ashore near San Simeon, California. At last count the Piedras Blancas breeding colony had grown to 16,000 adults and 2,500 pups!

This mother elephant seal will lose one-third of her body weight while nursing her baby.
