The Marine Mammal Center at the Marin Headlands (north of the Golden Gate Bridge) is a state-of-the-art animal hospital with research labs, pharmacy, kitchen, swimming pens, and education center. The patients are mainly seals and sea lions. The water filtration system runs through an abandoned Nike missile silo. When we arrived, it was feeding time. The volunteer kitchen staff were making fish milkshakes. They brought out frozen blocks of fish, pulled them apart, and then ground up the fish in a blender. Mmmmmm.
