Baby elephant seals are born with a black wrinkled coat of fur. The loose skin allows them to gain weight quickly. They grow from 80 to 300 pounds in just 3 weeks! The black skin helps the babies absorb warmth from the sun until they put on a layer of fat. At 6 weeks of age the babies' black fur is replaced by a silver coat.
