Birdwatchers have been fanning out into the countryside recently for the 110th annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count. It is the longest running wildlife census in the world. Birds are counted during December and January to give scientists an accurate view of bird populations and their current status in the wild. Last year 50,000 volunteers counted more than 6 million birds at 2,000 locations. California quail totaled one-half million in our state’s last bird count.
