Painted lady butterflies migrating through Bay Area

San Jose Mercury News: Thousands, perhaps millions of painted lady butterflies are migrating through the Bay Area this month, on their way north from where they hatched in Southern California desert areas.

The northward-migrating butterflies can fly here from the Southern California desert area in three days. Many Bay Area residents have seen clouds of butterflies everywhere they look for the past week.

Beginning in August the movement reverses and the butterflies head back south toward their desert wintering grounds, according to the UC Davis Web site.
