We enjoyed our trip to Mount Lassen Volcano National Park last weekend. Lassen Peak (10,457 feet) is one of the snowiest places in California. In winter the snow can get up to 30 feet deep. Lake Helen is still frozen! The panorama below of Lake Helen and Lassen Peak was created from 8 vertical photographs that were merged together within Photoshop.

Sugar pines grow in the mountains of California and Oregon (including Mount Lassen). Sugar pines have the longest cones in the world – up to 24 inches in length! In contrast, the redwood’s cone is the size of a marble. Sugar pines were named for their sweet resin.
