Sea pearls (also known as nickernuts) are a kind of sea bean. The prickly unripe green pod below is from a plant growing at Sebastian. Ripe sea pearls washed onto Florida’s Atlantic beaches are gray, and most likely come from the Caribbean. Varieties of sea pearls grow worldwide, and are used for medicine, jewelry, and as marbles.
