The young elephant seal pictures below were taken during our ranger-led walk at Ano Nuevo State Park. Young elephant seals gain weight very quickly on their mother's rich milk (it can be as thick as mayonnaise!). Once the seals are a month old, their mothers return to the sea to feed. Meanwhile, these young "weaners" are left on the beach to play and to learn how to swim.
