The picture below shows a banana slug next to a golden cap mushroom. Banana slugs are both male and female at the same time, and can grow up to 10 inches long. Students at the University of California, Santa Cruz, made "Sammy the Slug" their team mascot in 1981. In May 2004, Reader's Digest named it the best college mascot!
