Faith

Faith is not a happy flight of feeling; it is simply taking God at His word—believing that He will fulfill His promises because He said He would. OHC 119.5

"Liberty is the very essence of faith" The Spirit of Prophecy, vol. 4, p. 148.2.

"Faith claims God's promises, and brings forth fruit in obedience" The Faith I Live By, p. 122.5.

“We should now acquaint ourselves with God by proving his promises” YI July 12, 1904, par. 8.

"...If you want power (God-like character) you may have it; it is waiting your draft upon it. Only believe in God, take Him at His Word, act by faith, and blessings will come." The Publishing Ministry, p. 67.4

. . . "The just shall live by his (Christ's) faith” {GC88 392.1}.

What is Faith? “Faith is trusting God.” (Education, p. 253) "To each was given according to his faith." (Caleb and Joshua) (PATRIARCHS AND PROPHETS, PAGE 513) We Expect too little of our Father? "According to your faith be it unto you . . . !" Matthew 9:29. “This is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.” 1 John 5:4.

"True faith rests on the Promises contained in the Word of God, and those only who obey that Word can claim its glorious Promises." Early Writings, p. 72.2“We should now acquaint ourselves with God by proving his promises” YI July 12, 1904, par. 8."Will you not come to God as little children, appropriate His Promises, plead them before Him as His Own Words? If you do, you will receive fulnessof joy" Special Testimonies, March 15, 1910."The promises of God looked to me like so many precious pearls that were to be received by only asking for them." A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver. (Proverbs 25:11)

Some are seen to come forth from their daily communion with God clothed with the meekness of Christ. Their words ... come forth sweetly from their lips. They scatter seeds of love and kindness all along their path, ... because Christ lives in their heart. The tongue needs to be educated and disciplined and trained to speak of the glories of heaven, to talk of the matchless love of Jesus.

How to Pray in the Spirit:

  • As the believer bows in supplication before God, and in humility and contrition offers his petition from unfeigned lips, keeping his eyes fixed steadily on the Mediator (Son of God in the Heavenly Sanctuary, John 14:20) of the new covenant, he loses all thought of self. His mind is filled with the thought of what he must have in order to build up a Christlike character. He prays, “Lord, if I am to be a channel through which thy love is to flow day by day and hour by hour, I claim by faith the grace and power that thou hast promised." He fastens his hold firmly on the promise, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering.”

  • "To have faith means to find and accept the gospel treasure, with all the obligations which it imposes" (Christ's Object Lessons, p. 112).
