The bastion was built in 1745 under the direction of engineer colonel Miguel Marín with the collaboration of commander Antonio de Olmedo, during the War of Succession, and already in the 19th century it was used to defend the city in the French War of 1811 and subsequent armed conflicts.
The history of this place is written in relation to the subsequent uses that were intended to be given to the construction. During the 20th century, the different alternatives followed each other: building a casino, a hotel... In 1953, the city council granted the area the status of a Green Zone and authorized the construction of a hotel. The project was finally not carried out, and the construction which was indeed finally carried out began in 1989.
The Fortí de la Reina restaurant would occupy the interior of the monument.
The haphazard story ends with the demolition of the restaurant after a complaint initiated in the same year 1989 for having been built without the corresponding licence. After a long period of litigation, which was followed by all the people of Tarragona, some of whom constituted the "Save the Fortí" platform that opposed its demolition, it was ordered to be destroyed. In 2008 this was carried out and, currently, only the monument as such is preserved.
