The nomenclature of Carrer Castaños is attributed to Mr. Francisco Javier Castaños, duke of Bailén and an affable, modest man, who fulfilled his duty and who defeated the French general Dupont in the Battle of Bailén.
It also commemorates his father Don Felipe Castaños who, in 1768, was Intendant General of the Army and Navy of the Principality of Catalonia.
This street connects at one end with Carrer del Mar and, at the other, with the more than 90 stairs that lead up to a higher level on Carrer Doctor Zamenhof.

Around 1995, a block of flats was built on a site that was parallel to the stairs and which was used until then to park cars. In the space between the block and the old stairs, some new ones were built, thus giving rise to a staircase of greater width, with a railing down the middle.
On November 16, 2021, the Catalan Language and Literature Professionals and Scholars Association (APELLC) carried out the "Poetry Street" initiative in the Port of Tarragona neighbourhood with the collaboration of the Department of Culture of the Generalitat of Catalonia, Polígon Cultural and the Neighbourhood Association of the Port of Tarragona.
They chose the verses of Montserrat Abelló, born in Apodaca Street, number 23, a street that is very close to the port and in the same neighbourhood. This work was done by Gerard Martín, a graphic designer, illustrator, lyricist and typographer from Tarragona. One of the photographs that appears in the photo carousel is of the APELLC on the day of the event.
