At the heart of the square there is a monument to Mercury, the Roman god of commerce, which overlooks the various shops and administrative buildings located around the square: the Maritime Administration, the State Tax Administration Agency and the Archive of the Port of Tarragona.
The monument to Mercury, the work of the architect Francesc Barba and the sculptor Miró, was created in 1866. When the original sculpture disappeared after the Civil War, it was replaced by another one by Salvador Martorell.
This square was the centre of urban planning projects that aimed to improve the new neighbourhood of the Marina. It was also a centre for hiring men, transporting carts and stagecoaches.
