We all have heard the story of Taj Mehal where a king builds a palace in the remembrance of his beloved wife. There is a palace in Karachi build with the same love and compassion by a rich Marwari businessman Rai Bahadur Seth Shivratan Mohatta in 1927 for her beloved wife when she was ill, doctors advised her that the fresh sea air can improve her wife health.
The superior construction of this building and the quality of materials used are a testament not only to the love and care lavished on this palatial home, but also to the fact that no expenses were spared in the building of this beautiful structure.
They lived there for two decades and after the partition in 1947 this place became the first foreign office of Pakistan until the capital was shifted in Islamabad, In 1964 younger sister of Quaid-e-Azam, Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah moved here because of which this place was also known as “Qasr-e- Fatima” after her death, her sister Miss Shireen Jinnah moved in to occupy the ground floor, she also died in 1980 and after her death this palace was sealed.
In 1996 Sindh Government purchased this palace and devoted it for the promotion of Art and culture of Pakistan, since then many exhibitions have been displayed here for this cause, this place is very peaceful and have a very beautiful look but now neither Shivratan Mohatta is alive to enjoy the view nor her beloved wife.
