Mentor Spirits

Magic is not easy to navigate. There are dozens if not hundreds of spells, spirit types that are still being counted and detailed, and an ever-expanding number of Awakened critters and plants that are being discovered and researched. With all this magic, it helps to have some sort of a guide to help you out, someone who can not only teach you how to use magic, but who can help fit magic into some sort of code, giving meaning to the power you possess. Awakened individuals often turn to mentor spirits for this purpose. Mentor spirits often have deep roots in the mythology and traditions of many cultures, and they have shaped (and been shaped by) these cultures. Ever since the Awakening, they have become something more than belief, helping shape and channel the magic of the people who follow them.

This mentor spirit is much like other spirits in that it has its own personality, but it’s not a spirit in the summon-and-banish sense of the term. It can be seen and heard by those it chooses, and it can even physically interact with its followers. A person’s mentor spirit can have significant influence over them, offering benefits when they remain true or punishing them if they go astray (usually with temporary reductions to their Magic rating).

Magical mentorship can come in different forms. Often individuals have their own link to their mentor spirit, but an Awakened guild or society can become linked to a mentor spirit as a group.

There is no real understanding of the nature of mentor spirits, but their general goal is clear: They want to keep Awakened individuals on the path that helped shape and give reality to the mentor spirit in the first place.

The mentor spirit can provide cryptic clues, riddles, omens, and sometimes even straightforward advice. Any Awakened character can connect with a mentor spirit by taking the Mentor Spirit quality (p. 73). They also may be awarded in the course of role-playing, provided the player character has done enough to deserve it

Alligator

A follower of the alligator is stubborn in changing plans or actions after they have committed to it. They are known to be ill-tempered, lazy, and misery but are strong fighters and will finish anything they agree to with ferocity.

Adept Advantage: Gain Inertia Strike for free.

Disadvantage: Must succeed a Composure (3) test to make mental adjustments to plans. If they fail, they must go along with the original plan regardless of whether it was good, or even the one accepted by the group.

Arcana

Followers of the Arcana place their decisions in the hands of tarot cards, as they believe destiny can be found there along with great power. The cards may not speak with words, but they are always present for guidance... and interpretation.

All: Once per day, when making a decision or test influenced by a Tarot card or reading, they may re-roll any misses as if they had used Edge.

Magician: +1 Dice Pool Modifier with Detection spells. +2 Dice Pool Modifier with Clairvoyance spells.

Disadvantage: Arcana followers must use tarot cards as foci and fetishes or else take a -2 Dice Pool Penalty when attempting to use foci or cast spells.

Architect

Architect followers are known to be true to their name - while they come in many different forms they demand to be in charge by virtue of personality. They have intense troubles letting go of leadership positions or giving up ground, and followers of the Architect are genuinely uncomfortable with any alteration to their plans or unwanted surprises.

Disadvantage: WIL + INT (3) to avoid a -2 Dice Pool Penalty to all test when not in charge of the situation or forced into defensive actions.

Artist

Those who follow the Artist are almost like the old muse-driven artistes of old. They carry with them many different personalities but what they unify under is a banner of demanding attention and focusing themselves with expertise in their chosen artform until they are the best they can be and then presenting their work to a suitable audience. They are known to become inconsolable without an audience and, to many, distracted and unbearable if they haven't had the opportunity to show their work to a willing audience on a regular basis.

All: +2 Dice Pool Modifier on all tests involving the character's chosen art form.

Magician: +2 Dice Pool Modifier to Illusion spells.

Adept: Gain 2 Dice Rerolls on all skill tests involving the character's chosen art form.

Disadvantage: Must succeed a Composure (3) to avoid a -2 Dice Pool Penalty to all Logic, Intuition, and Charisma skills for 1D6 days if no audience is found for your chosen art within a 2-week period.

Badger

Followers of the Badger are notoriously variable compared to other animal mentor magicians. Some are solitary, ill-tempered and nomadic while others are known to form found - or biological - families with ease and become attached to places or things. What unifies them is the fact that they are very territorial and when push comes to shove they will want to follow an offender who strikes against them in their sanctuary until the ends of the Earth unless they take a concerted effort to stop themselves.

Adept: Gain Danger Sense II for free.

Disadvantage: Must succeed a Composure (3) to not immediately pursue invaders on guarded turf.

Bat

Bat is well-traveled, rarely staying in one place. As a seeker, they set far-reaching goals and get restless when not moving. They are adaptable and can make themselves at home anywhere - followers of Bat keep things light and portable for traveling.

All: +2 Dice Pool Modifier on all Outdoors (Navigation) tests.

Magician: +1 Dice Pool Modifier to Conjuring (Summoning) tests.

Adept: Gain Motion Sense for free.

Disadvantage: Every week that the magician stays in the first place, they take a -1 Dice Pool Penalty to all actions until they find a new place to stay.

Also, unless they succeed a Composure (3) test, they cannot enter a hangout more than once a week without suffering a -1 Dice Pool Penalty to all Magic tests for the next 24 hours.

Bear

This mentor symbolizes strength and protection. They are a healer and cannot turn down those in need without good reason, and they defend those under their care. They also have a fierce side: they are dedicated protectors who will disregard their own safety for the protection of others.

All: +2 Dice Pool Modifier on all toxin and disease resistance tests.

Magician: +2 Dice Pool Modifier to Health spells, preparations, and rituals.

Adept: Gain Rapid Healing for free.

Disadvantage: You may go berserk when you take Physical damage in combat or if someone under your care is badly injured. Make a Composure test (wound modifiers apply).

You go berserk for 3 Combat Rounds minus 1 round per hit. If you're already going berserk, then increase the duration. When you're berserk, increase the duration. When you're berserk, you go after your attackers without regards to your own safety.

If you incapacitate the targets before the time is up, the fury dissipates.

Berserker

Those who follow Berserker just love fighting for the sake of fighting. Be it with words, fists, or spells they are always down to throw down. They are the greatest of all warriors, capable of wading into battle without fear and they will wage their way singlehandedly if necessary.

Magician: +2 Dice Pool Modifier for Physical-type Combat spells, preparations, and rituals.

Adept: Gain Mystic Armor II or Pain Resistance II, or one level of each, for free.

Disadvantage: Whenever someone strongly disagrees with you, you must pass a Composure (3) test to keep from striking out against the offender. If the test fails, the attack can be in any form you choose but it must have the intent to cause damage.

Blacksmith

Blacksmith followers are skilled artisans who make things not just for the sake of it being useful but for the inherent artistry of perfecting a skill and the ambition to become the best at something. Most followers of Blacksmith are actual blacksmiths but all those who work with fire have been found under the banner at one point or another even including glassmakers. The unifying quality of Blacksmith followers is their fiery temper.

Adept: Gain Enhanced Accuracy II (Choose One) for free.

Disadvantage: Must succeed a Composure (3) to not immediately avenge an insult through some form of retribution.

Boar

Followers of the Boar are static in their ways. They keep to a daily routine and hold on to their stuff until it wears away. Some people would call them boring or unspontaneous, others would call them hoarders. Followers believe themselves to be loyal to the places that are part of their routine, and they are very protective of their territory.

All: Gain the Home Ground quality for free.

Magician: +1 to the number of services gained when successfully summoning a spirit.

Adept: Gain Rooting II for free.

Disadvantage: At best, the follower protects the employees and customers of their favorite haunt they go to. At worst, they will start a fight for a specific table or stool that they think is theirs.

A warning is optional, but they must succeed a Composure (3) test for a follower to leave their routine, safehouse, or home permanently otherwise they will keep coming back even at their own risk. If Boar does leave, they receive a -1 Dice Pool Penalty to all skill tests for 3 weeks until they settle into a new place.

Brother In Arms

A believer in the spirit of metahumanity itself, Brothers In Arms followers see themselves as a protector of those they come into close bonds with, regardless of if they are their senior or the other person does not reciprocate these feelings. They tend to have issues taking advantage of their allies, lying to them, or doing anything remotely duplicitous due to their strong feelings of camaraderie even if the end result of such actions saves their charges lives.

All: +1 Dice Pool Modifier to all Influence (Etiquette) and Influence (Instruction) tests.

Magician: +2 Dice Pool Modifier to summoning Guardian Spirits or Spirits of Kin.

Adept: Gain Mystic Armor for free.

Disadvantage: WIL + INT (3) whenever the character wishes to take advantage of, lie, or abandon someone they consider their charge. They receive a -2 Dice Pool Penalty until they atone, even if the result of the action is technically positive.

Capricorn

Followers of Capricorn, also known as the astrological magicians, tend to adhere and believe in the Zodiac as a system almost akin to a religion. They adhere to the Capicorn as an Earth Sign and are known to be remarkably lacking in wisdom due to their capricious nature and often ignore long planning sessions or discussions altogether and instead choose the first - not the best - option presented to them.

Disadvantage: Must succeed a Composure (3) to withstand long periods of indecision instead of executing the first plan that comes to mind.

Cat

Cat is often seen as the guardian of mystical secrets, including those involving the afterlife. They know many secrets but rarely decide to share them. They are stealthy, sly, and arrogant and rarely go just for the kill.

All: +2 Dice Pool Modifier during Athletics (Gymnastics) tests or Stealth (Sneaking) tests, pick one.

Magician: +2 Dice Pool Modifier for Illusion spells, preparations, and rituals.

Adept: Gain Great Leap II for free.

Disadvantage: Must succeed a Composure (3) test at the start of combat. If you fail, you cannot make an attack that incapacitates your target. If you take any Physical damage, all this playing around stops.

Chaos

Adherents of Chaos seemingly do things at random and love to start arguments or barroom brawls just for kicks, often through random trickery. While most people have a fixed sense of right and wrong, a Chaos follower's compass points in a different direction from moment to moment.

Magician: +2 Dice Pool Modifier to Illusion spells, preparations, and rituals.

Adept: Gain 2 Dice Rerolls on impulsive actions.

Disadvantage: You are an inveterate gossip trying to stir up trouble, especially between friends and thus cannot keep damaging secrets to yourself.

Also, anytime you encounter a public situation deemed too quiet or too stable, make a WIL + INT (3) test. Failure means that you are compelled to stir the pot in any way you desire, be it by attacking, telling lies, or throwing a drink on someone nearby.

Coyote

Coyote is the master of tricks, the spirit who is never where you are looking for them and always one step ahead of you. Their best tricks are the ones you never knew they pulled, perfect cons where the mark just feels like the victim of bad luck and doesn't know how badly they got taken. Coyote's tricks aren't necessarily malicious, but they also aren't necessarily innocent.

Disadvantage: Must succeed a Composure (3) test to avoid exploiting someone else's misfortune to your own advantage or to pull a clever trick or prank even if it's to the disadvantage of your friends.

Dachshund

Followers of Dachsund are playful, but also can be quite stubborn and are known for their propensity for chasing new goals with great determination and ferocity. They are challenging people to deal with in a group scenario, as they tend to be aggressive towards strangers and even those they consider allies. Despite this, they are typically great trackers and exceptional at rooting out danger before it strikes.

Dark King

Most know the Dark King as the keeper of the dead with a kingdom in the underworld. Followers of the Dark King know them as the keeper of many secrets, as "taking it to the grave" doesn't apply to them. Followers are business suits who deal in secrets. Some are simple insider traders but others are more mystical, looking to negotiate with spirits for more esoteric knowledge.

Adept: Gain Spirit Ram for free.

Disadvantage: The connection that followers have to the Dark King make pain and suffering much more significant, as if the Dark King wants their followers to join them as soon as possible. Receive an additional point of Physical damage whenever you take it from any source.

Death

Also known as Hades, Osiris, Hel, Dis Pater, Mannanan, Sheol and the Grim Reaper. Every belief system deals with death. Either they worship it as a god, or their god fights against it but regardless it is present. Those who take Death on as a mentor spirit are not necessarily evil, but they would suggest they see the world for what it truly is: temporary. Those who follow Death are not bothered by the final destination of the living but rather they celebrate it and spend their time alive preparing for the inevitable and often find themselves knowledgeable about topics that are considered traditionally taboo.

Doberman

Followers of Doberman are known as alert, tenaciously loyal and great guards. Their personalities vary a great deal between each individual, but the unifying factors are that they are driven, strong, and stubborn when it comes to following orders. They have a take-charge personality and prefer to make up the plan, even if they aren't the one leading the charge.

Dog

Dog is a loyal friend. They fight ferociously to defend their home and those under their protection. Dog protects people from harmful magic and dangerous spirits freely. They are loyal, generous, and helpful to those who show them kindness. They are oftentimes single-minded, sometimes to the point of stubbornness.

Dolphin

Followers of Dolphin are graceful, free-spirited people who enjoy playful banter and have to move when the music plays. They see things optimistically and believe there is good in the world despite current conditions of corporate politics and pollution. They are not naive but somehow have faith in humanity at its core.

Adept: Gain Flexibility II for free.

Disadvantage: Must succeed a Composure (3) test to resist turning a blind eye to not get involved when they see someone getting bullied or obviously polluting the environment. If the job that the follower of Dolphin is involved in requires polluting the environment or being a bully on those less deserving, then they receive a -2 Dice Pool Penalty for each deed until they atone.

Dove

The mentor spirit Dove is a messenger of peace and a mediator for harmony. Often, those who are found following Dove care so deeply that they are willing to endure harm for the safety of others. Doves seek to remain aware and in touch with the environment around them. They are in tune with her environment, and they pride themselves on remaining aware in all circumstances. Encouraging purity and integrity, followers of Dove often have difficulty remaining true to their highest ideals, but Dove also represents gentleness and forgiveness, allowing those on their path to dust themselves off and try again.

Dragonslayer

Dragonslayer is often seen as the most heroic mentor spirit and the most fun loving. Followers fight to protect their own against all dangers and they love a good party even more. They are a big brother who takes a friendly interest in everything their family does. Though often naive, they make a staunch friend and a deadly enemy. The dragons they slay have changed with the times: current beasts include crime, pollution, corruption, megacorporations and - of course - actual dragons. Dragonslayer followers fight hard and play hard and once they give their oath, they never break it. A Dragonslayer magician behaves with honor and respect and demands the same from those around them.

Eagle

Eagle is the highest-flying bird in the sky, considered the most noble by many cultures. They are proud and solitary, and sees everything happening in the world below. Eagles are noble defenders of the purity of nature. They are intolerant of those who do not share their views and have a strong distrust of technology and its tools. Those who damage nature are Eagle’s enemies, and Eagle will brave great danger to defeat polluters and other evildoers.

Eurasian Jay

Followers of the Eurasian Jay are not unlike the corvid themselves. They plan for the future via secretive and oftentimes underhanded means. They are experts at spotting trouble, taking what they want, and exceedingly neurotic when it comes to hiding their belongings over a wide area as to avoid losing everything.

Fire-Bringer

The Fire-Bringer stole the secret of fire from the heavens and gave it to metahumanity as a gift and a tool. They are a figure of kindness and concern, but their good intentions sometimes get them into trouble and their plans may fail to work out the way they envision them. They are a shaper and a creator, forming new things from the primal clay and breathing the fiery spark of life into them. Fire-Bringers devote themselves to the betterment of others, even at their own expense. Most followers of Fire-Bringer throw themselves into a particular cause with great zeal.

Fox

Followers of the Fox are cunning and well-practiced in mischief when they do their job, whatever that may be. They also are unified under a complete lack of hesitation to finish a fight, seeing violence as a quick and tricky thing to finish as soon as possible.

Gambler

Liars. Cheats. Stealers. Braggarts. Followers of the Gambler are known by many names but what unifies all of them is a certain panache, a je ne sais quoi, that extra something-something that makes them truly stand out in a crowd. They are often at the center of problems even if they're not the ones making it - chances are they're exploiting it.

German Shepherd

Followers of German Shepherd are natural leaders, protectors, and fighters who won't back away from a challenge that's worthwhile and they're well-known in many militaries as the largest percentage of combat shaman from Europe. They also are notoriously ill-tempered and the moment their patience is tested in any scenario they tend to lash out.

Disadvantage: Must succeed a Composure (3) not to react harshly when their patience is tested.

Giraffe

A follower of the Giraffe mentor spirit sees beyond the horizon. They seek to see or hear the truth beyond what is presented. A giraffe follower may seem a little off as they either looks off into space and appears to not pay attention or looks too intently at you as if they're judging your soul.

Disadvantage: A follower of Giraffe stumbles through social etiquette, as she believes the small talk and chitchat that are the core of social chatter are fundamentally dishonest and not worthy of her efforts. They also suffer a -2 Dice Pool Modifier on all Influence tests.

Goddess

The Goddess has taken many forms in many different cultures. This is not simply a goddess; those who follow the Goddess totem recognize the inherent power of the divine feminine. Whether known by particular names such as Diana, Cybele, AShera, Awilix, Isis, Ishtar, Freya, the Hera or the Moon itself, the Goddess lifts up the sacredness of women. The Goddess is a mediator of sacred knowledge and greater universal mysteries, and Goddess reveals the hidden wisdom and strength in her followers.

Disadvantage: Must succeed a Composure (3) to accept orders from someone who identifies as a male. This roll also applies when a male-identifying person disrespects you, and if you fail you must respond in equal measure.

Great Mother

The Great Mother embodies nature and supports all living things. She also embodies fertility; her bounty is great, even in the Sixth World, and she gives of it generously to anyone who needs it. She will fight to the death to protect her children. Her followers are the healers of both body and soul and cannot refuse aid to those who need it.

Green Man

The Green Man mentor spirit, not to be confused with the green man extraplanar spirit, is a totem of the natural life and death cycles of plants. Green Man is that life-giving and nurturing aspect of nature, and the embodiment of it. While most consider vegetation to be passive, there is rather a wild element to the growth and death gathered together in plant life. While other, more particular totems like Oak and Great Mother are also nature spirits, Green Man is solely focused on plant life in all of its diversity and breadth.

Disadvantage: Must succeed a Composure (3) test when faced with plant life that is wantonly being destroyed. If they fail, they must use all means possible to stop the destruction.

Groundhog

Followers of the Groundhog are not known for their bravery. They are, however, known for their diligence and speed and many of them also have a reputation for being very likable people and also for being so hyperaware of conflict that they'll often be heading to the door before tensions rise enough for the first punch to be thrown. When that punch is thrown, they are also known for another thing: an overwhelming impulse to flee.

Guanyin

Guanyin is the goddess of compassion and mercy. She sees people in need and swoops down to protect them. She hates those who cause misery. She is the doctor who helps the poor and the street samurai who kills the gangers preying on the SINless. She is strong and her mercy swift.

Throughout history, the faithful of myriad faiths have claimed that their particular sacred scriptures spoke to them. For some, this guidance may come in the form of the words themselves, but for others, it is a more mystical experience where the text comes alive. Those who follow these texts have a solitary commitment to the values and insights they glean from them, and as such, there is nothing in this world that can shake their confidence or commitment to them. While the texts are all different, the discipline used in reading, understanding, and practicing their words is common.

Horse

Followers of the Horse mentor spirit are the embodiment of freedom. They must be out in the open air and allowed to roam the open road. Followers are never intentionally stubborn or malicious, but they do not like to feel impeded or confined by someone else. This unfortunately also means that followers of Horse may sacrifice personal relationships for freedom.

Adept: May learn the Movement critter power as a metamagic. They may only use it on themselves and only 3 times a day.

Lion

Lion is a strong and proud warrior with no use for subtlety or cowardice. Lion has the discipline to hold back its immense power until the right moment, so followers do not mind setting an ambush or using stealth. When it is time to fight, however, a Lion gives it their all and holds nothing back. Pride is everything to them. Hunting, fighting, killing are all secondary to the needs of pride where their true strength lies.

Disadvantage: You will do anything to protect your friends and family. In combat situations, a Lion will never leave an ally behind and fight to the death to protect them. Unless you pass a Composure (3) test, you cannot flee combat before your team members are safe. Furthermore, when you are taking actions that don't somehow benefit the team you receive a -2 Dice Pool Penalty to all tests.

Little Red Riding Hood

Followers of Little Red Riding Hood are typically found in the Allied German States and are known to be exceptionally chatty - be somewhat dense - individuals. They are typically uncomfortable in new places, often to the point of fear, but not with new people. Many of them are easy to lie to, but their strengths lie in their own ability to tell a tall tale or fib.

Monkey

Monkey is clever and playful and finds people amusing. A follower of Monkey is a foe of evil and enjoys taunting and frustrating the plans of those who would harm them or their friends. Magicians following Monkey like to taunt opponents, using magic to misdirect, confuse, or otherwise trick them into "learning their lesson" rather than seriously harming or killing them.

Moon

Moon is changeable and secretive. They see much from their high vantage point and keeps many secrets hidden from prying eyes under the veil of night. Moon is also a transformer, ever changing and unknowable. Followers of Moon are not aggressive, taking the subtler approach with any mission. They prefer to keep a low profile and act through subterfuge.

Mountain

Mountain is rooted in the very heart of the Earth but reaches toward lofty heights. They have limitless strength and endurance, but Mountain’s inflexible nature limits them. Mountain is a stubborn and unyielding force, and Mountain magicians are difficult to persuade once they have made up their minds about something.

Mountain Lion

Followers of Mountain Lion are known to be self-assured, semi-social hunters that act with a self-importance and pride that can oftentimes border on arrogance. They care deeply for what is seen as their "territory," and that may be an area, a group of people or otherwise and always enjoy the thrill of the hunt if it's to reasons that suit them.

Oak

Followers of Oak are stalwart and silent. They listen to the world around them and calculate their next action. A follower may be slow to act, but when they make their move, they do it with conviction. They protect others, shielding small plants and moss from the elements. Strong shields, buildings, and ships are made from Oak. Followers protect anyone they have agreed to defend steadfastly, even unto death.

Oracle

Past, present, and future - Oracle knows all and sees all. They peel back the veil of mystery and reveals what has been, what is, and what will be. Nothing escapes their notice, and things that are hidden do not remain hidden for long.

Peacemaker

Deep down, all Peacemaker wants is for everyone to get along, even if they are currently mortal enemies. They believe every argument can be solved in some way; on the other hand, they know some arguments require force or bodily harm in order get one’s point across.

Pig

Followers of Pig know how to have a good time. In fact, regardless of their personality their one unifying trait is that it's difficult to pull them away from a good time. To some that's raucous partying and to others that's lazing about on the beach in the sun but for most of them there is one definitive pleasure they put above all else - sometimes even other people - and cannot help but indulge in and are known to ham it up before a crowd at any opportunity.

Planar Entity

Taking Planar Entity as a mentor spirit is only available to Planar mages. The Planar mage must choose a free spirit or extraplanar entity to serve as a mentor spirit. The gamemaster determines what advantages the spirit brings to the pact with the player, but they should be complementary to the spirit’s influence. For example, a free fire spirit may grant +2 when casting fire-based spells, whereas a shedim may grant immunity to aging.

Disadvantage: Taking an extraplanar entity into one's soul is not without its drawbacks. Much of a magician's mental ability is taken up keeping themselves from losing their identity as a result of their shared existence. Mages suffer a -2 Dice Pool Penalty to all Willpower tests.

Raccoon

Followers of Raccoon would not call themselves thieves. Maybe entrepreneurs. They are inquisitive and have an intense curiosity about things, which can lead them into danger. They are above petty thefts and don’t delve into violent robberies. Followers of Raccoon are artists in the field of pilfering or trickery and will strategize a plan that emphasizes their talent and flamboyance.

Rat

Rat is found wherever humans and the things they discard are, for what other bounty can sustain them? Rat is a scavenger, a stealthy thief who takes what they need to survive. They dislike working out in the open, preferring to stick to the shadows. Rat avoids fights whenever they can when he must fight, they fight to kill quickly and move on.

Rat (Chinese)

Contrary to the way that Westerners understand rats to be dirty, disease-ridden filth that exist within the cracks of society, Chinese culture has a much more positive understanding of the totem Rat. As the first animal of the Chinese zodiac, Rat occupies a place of prominence, with none of the negatives typically associated with dirty rodents. Rather, rats are seen as bringing vitality and intelligence. Rat encourages creative problem-solving and alertness to potential threats. A life of following Rat can lead to tremendous fortune.

Raven

Raven is a harbinger of trouble in cultures worldwide. They are a trickster and a transformer, dark and devious. Raven thrives off the bounty of carnage and chaos, but does not cause them - they merely knows an opportunity when they sees one. Raven loves to eat and rarely refuses an offer of food. Raven is cousin to Coyote, who shares trickster inclinations with Raven but lacks their darkness and propensity for carnage.

Raven (North American)

In the Native American mythology, the Raven is the offering the light from the darkness. They are a gatherer of secrets, a cautious savior, and most importantly they gather information or goods and perhaps offer something in return - with a Raven follower, there is never a "something for nothing." All debts must be repaid and any freely given boon will be returned in the future, if for no reason but the follower's own personal peace of time because getting a "no strings attached" gift is essentially psychological torture to them and they prefer to have not a single debt left unpaid.

Disadvantage: Followers of Raven share their mentor's love of collecting. When presented with data, knowledge, or other gear that would be valuable, the character must pass a Composure (3) or be unable to resist acquiring it.

Sea

Sea is the birthplace of all living creatures. They are unfathomable and moody, tranquil and comforting one moment, fearsome and destructive the next. Though they possess great wealth, they jealously guard what comes into their hands. Sea can be a powerful ally, but they must be courted with great care.

Seal

Followers of Seal are known to be steady friends with an extremely concentrated personality. They are involved in other's lives almost as a form of entertainment and see their friend's lives as their own, never mind the fact that they feel at home near the sea or any body of water. The downside to Seal followers is that they have little concept of personal privacy; either with information, staying too long in a friend's apartment or not knowing when to say goodbye they always seem to run into trouble by overstaying their welcome... or never asking for it to begin with.

Seducer

The Seducer is the incarnation of desire. They have many whims and vices that they must frequently satisfy. They encourage jealousy and greed and seeks to inflame the wants of others. They avoid direct confrontation but gains pleasure when others fight for his attention or on his behalf. They exist to exploit weaknesses and will not hesitate to sacrifice those who get in his way.

Shark

Shark is a cold and relentless hunter. Their power is known to all who live near the sea. When Shark strikes, they do so without mercy, driven into a frenzy by the blood of his prey. Shark magicians tend to be wanderers, always on the move. They are fierce and deadly warriors. A Shark magician believes the only good enemy is a dead enemy. If challenged, they do not waste time with threats or boasts but strikes to kill.

Disadvantage: Succeed a Composure (3) test to avoid going berserk whenever you take Physical damage in combat. If the follower fails, they go berserk for 3 Combat Rounds minus 1 round per hit. When berserk, the follower chases their attacker without regard for their own safety. If the target dies before the time's up, the follower keeps attacking the body.

Snake

Snake is wise and knows many secrets. They are a good counselor, but always exacts a price for their advice. Snake characters fight only to protect themselves and others. They are obsessed with learning secrets and take great risks in order to do so. They trade their knowledge to others for whatever they can get in exchange.

Spider

Spider likes to feel a connection to everything. To be at the center of a web connecting all sorts of news and able to feel the pulse of the world. Followers of Spider like to be in the know, establishing connections, be it directly with people or through surveillance. Some may feel that followers of Spider are nothing more than Awakened bloggers who scan the Matrix for tidbits of the truth.

Disadvantage: Followers of spider receive a -1 Dice Pool Modifier to all Magic-related tests while out in the open or in large rooms such as theaters or stadiums. The penalty doubles if there is also a large crowd of people.

Spider (Alt)

Spider is one of the more feared and despised totems in the Sixth World. The threat posed by insect spirits is never far from the world’s consciousness, and most metahumans still group spiders together with insects (although they are arachnids, scientifically speaking). But the fear of spiders goes deeper than that. Metahumanity has an almost biological fear or spiders, and for good evolutionary reasons, but that isn’t all Spider is. As many cultures know, Spider is not just one thing. Also known as Anansi, Iktomi, or Grandfather Spider, this totem has adapted quite well to the Sixth World. In regions across the globe, Spider presents as a trickster, schemer, and hunter. Followers of Spider embody all of these traits and see Spider not as a boogeyman, but as a wise and powerful patron.

Squirrel

A follower of Squirrel leads a very active, athletic life and doesn't enjoy being tied down in enclosed spaces. Often underestimated due to the name of their mentor spirit they are bold and sometimes even aggressive when faced with someone or something they do not like.

Stag

Stag is noble and swift, a spirit of life and death. Stag represents the timeless cycle of birth, death, and rebirth that encompasses all living things. Followers of the Stag live life to the fullest and do not forget slights to their dignity. Vengeance in the form of duels or single combat is quite common.

Adept: Gain Light Body II for free.

Disadvantage: Must succeed a Composure (3) test once disrespected. If they fail, the follower must demand satisfaction from the offender.

Sun

Sun is the life giver of the world. Sun loves to shine on and give warmth to everyone. On the other hand, it does not trust those who do their deeds where Sun cannot see them. Similar to fire, the Sun can be a force for life through heat, light, and life, but can also be a force for great destruction if not respected. Those who follow Sun value honor, honesty, and integrity. As a result, shadowrunners who follow Sun are a rare sort indeed, often falling into groups of like-minded individuals. Sun is among the most likely mentors to strip powers away from wayward shamans, so those who follow it should be on their guard against giving offense.

The Adversary

Wherever there is cosmological order, there is an entity that wishes to overthrow it. The Adversary is the original rebel against the powers that be. Followers of the Adversary have serious issues with authority and conformity. Followers range from those dedicated to helping the underprivileged and abused (by “the man”) to the one who indulges his love of anarchy for its own sake. Free will and cynicism are the Adversary follower’s tools and trade.

Disadvantage: Any leadership bonuses from a teammate's leadership skill result in a dice pool penalty rather than a bonus, or even a loss of initiative. If a plan doesn't go the way that an adversary follower wants it to go, they must succeed a Composure (3) test to cooperate.

Thunderbird

Thunderbird is a majestic creature who is storm incarnate. Their wings are dark clouds, their beak and claws lightning, and their cries the clap of thunder. They are a primal force, often savage but necessary to the survival of the land and the continuation of the cycle of life. Thunderbird is a force to be respected and approached with great care, lest their anger be roused.

Tide

Followers of the Tide are followers of a rigid balance, a cycle of ebbs and flows, of low tide and high tide. They believe so dearly in the sake of balance that they are known for it in every aspect of their life: many of the followers of Tide spend half of their life in the shadows and half of it outside, or they spend half their time on leisure and the latter half on work. Regardless of how they cut it, they are known as exceptionally rigid.

Tohu Wa-Bohu

Tohu Wa-Bohu is the name given to the nameless IT that preceded the more-or-less ordered universe we have now. Tohu Wa-Bohu is no devil, demiurge, or force of evil. Neither is it a trickster, prankster, or simple force of chaos out to mix things up. Rather, it is the primal force of entropy that seeks to break down all life, all structure, all elements back into the chaotic dark from whence the universe emerged. Followers of Tohu Wa-Bohu do not seek to rule the world, nor do they seek to correct it. They seek its end. Whether they want it now, or after they have had their fun, is up for debate, as followers of Tohu Wa-Bohu live to see every form of order brought low and for everything reasonable to be tossed into disarray.

Treasure Hunter

The Treasure Hunter is known as equal parts adventurer and obsessive and its followers are nothing but the same. They require an item, some sort of McGuffin, to keep in their life as the ultimate goal - and it is usually something quite valuable. Everything they do involves the McGuffin and Treasure Hunter followers are known to be equal parts tenacious regarding their goals and aloof regarding all others.

War

Some have said war is hell. Others have said war is all there is. One thing is certain, however. War is inevitable. Since the first time one tribe fought another, there has been war, and there always will be. That is why gods of war have always been present in every pantheon. That is why the world’s nations and megacorporations still pay homage to War through military industrial complexes, R&D departments, troop deployments, flag-waving civil religion, and honoring the military above all else, regardless of right or wrong. The Worship of War is alive and well, and as War’s followers know, there is always more that can be taught to those willing to listen and act. War can’t be considered “good,” but not truly evil either. War is inherently selfish, using violence as a means to get what one wants, although sometimes what one wants is violence for its own sake. Both suits War just fine.

Weimaraner

Followers of the Weimaraner are energetic to a fault. They are known for having seemingly boundless levels of it and an equally boundless desire to use it. Many of them are physically oriented and are known to become restless and irritable if they spend too much time being idle.

Those Whale adopts into their personal circle receive their total loyalty and they expect the same in return. Followers of Whale are also patient in their work and will take the time to make sure all details are complete.

Disadvantage: Because of their personal sense of ethics, followers of the whale must honor any agreement they enter into. This can be an oath to an organization or a verbal contract with a corporation. Failing to honor your contract or oath results in a loss of a point of Magic. Whale understands if circumstances are out of the mentee's hands, however for everything else they must atone.

Wise Warrior

The Wise Warrior is skilled in the art of war, for battle is an art to them as well as an exercise in the powers of the mind and body. They study the tactics of their foes and overcomes them through a combination of superior strategy and battle prowess. The Wise Warrior does not act out of savagery or battle-lust but from a position of knowledge and wisdom. Wise Warriors must follow the warrior's code of honor and conduct themselves properly or risk the loss of favor from this mentor.

Wolf is recognized as a hunter warrior worldwide. They are devoted to the other members of their pack. As the ancient saying goes: wolf wins every fight but one - the one that kills them. Wolf magicians are loyal to friends and family to the death. They do not show cowardice in battle and their word is their bond.

Whether among the Germanic peoples, Finnic, Christian, or in folk and fairy tales in Europe wolves are often the hunter and the enemy of the civilized world. That is not to say they're evil, but certainly hostile and predatory on those too weak to defend themselves.

Followers of Wolpentinger are known to be skittish people who see danger all around them, even if that danger is imaginary. Masters of not getting caught, combat is typically a last resort to them unless they steel themselves consciously and followers of Wolpentinger are rarely seen outside of Germany, but similar mentors such as the North American Jackalope and the Swedish Skvader resemble Wolpentinger followers in behavior.

Toxic Mentor Spirits

Disease

Disease embodies the infection and virulence that is rampant in many areas of toxicity. It is the ultimate parasite of the world, subsisting off of the waste of others, growing and gaining strength in hidden or forgotten places. Followers of disease seek to spread its influence throughout the world, in a slow but steady infection of things. Followers of this toxic mentor spirit collaborate with each other and work in groups to achieve their goal.

Adept: Gain Plague Cloud for free.

Disadvantage: Followers of Disease must succeed a Composure (3) test to not flee or seek cover in a combat situation, unless they outnumber their opponents.

Doom

Doom embodies the desire of toxics to bring an end to all life on the planet. They seek to hastens the inevitable - as they see it - apocalypse and turn the world into a barren, polluted landscape. Followers of Doom see metahumanity as too flawed to be allowed to survive and thus carry out an agenda of total destruction. As a result of their nihilistic outlook, followers of Doom are isolationist and anti-social.

Disadvantage: Followers of Doom must succeed a Composure (3) test to avoid a fight once it has begun or to not enact a plan to do violence. If they fail, they must engage in combat until all opponents are defeated or flee.

Mutation

Mutation is the ultimate changer of ways: it seeks to alter every living thing into a new form and a new creation in its own image. Mutation does not hate life but wants all life to be remade as it chooses to remake it. Followers of mutation conspire to control, manipulate, and change all living things. To that end, they spread pollution and corruption like other toxic spirits but in more subtle ways.

Disadvantage: If a follower of Mutation finds themselves inferior to an opponent they suffer a -1 Dice Pool Penalty on all actions until they defeat their rival in that area or overcome or compensate for the weakness in another way.

Pollution

Pollution embodies the defilement of the natural world and its destruction. Followers of pollution celebrate the rape of the natural world and believe that pollution is the ultimate primal force in the Sixth World. Followers of pollution also believe they grow stronger as the result of mankind's industries and their ability to produce more of the irresistible power of corrupting chemicals.

Magician: +2 Dice Pool Modifier to summon or bind toxic spirits of air, earth, or water (Choose One).

Adept: Gain Toxic Strike for free.

Disadvantage: If they are in an area cleaner than their normal habitation, followers of pollution must succeed a Composure (3) test every day. If they fail, they must spend at least 8 hours actively despoiling the land, regardless of any other plans they had.

Wild Hunt

Followers of the Wild Hunt are typically found in nearly every culture under different names, but the Wild Hunt itself is popular due to its presence in Wales and most of Western Europe. This mentor is a toxic, utterly ruthless hunter whose followers single-mindedly focus themselves on hunting other beings. They bear no sympathy or remorse or even quarter within a fight and are known to savagely torment their opponents to the point of death and even beyond.

Adept: Gain Berserk for free.
