Optical & Imaging Devices

Contacts, shades, or bulky goggles, vision enhancers come in a variety of designs. All devices have wireless capability and default to its use, but you can use a universal data cable for most of them. Devices have a Capacity that allows you to add vision enhancements. You can never have enhancements whose capacity cost totals more than the device’s Capacity. Some of these devices are worn, while others are external sensor devices or even attached to weapons.

Binoculars

Typically handheld, binoculars come with builtin vision magnification. Electronic binoculars can take a variety of vision enhancements. Spellcasters can use optical binoculars for casting spells at distant targets.

Worn directly on the eyes, they are nearly undetectable but offer little space for enhancements. Contacts have to be wireless.

Endoscope

This fiber-optic cable is at least one meter long, with the first twenty centimeters on either side made up of myomeric rope and an optical lens. It allows the user to look around corners, under door slits, or into narrow spaces. It is available in any number of lengths, although longer segments can be unwieldy.

Glasses

Glasses are lenses contained in lightweight frames worn on the bridge of the nose and include numerous cosmetic styles. Vision enhancement-equipped glasses are hard to distinguish from prescription glasses or sunglasses at a glance.

Grenade-Cam

A dodecahedron-shaped multi-purpose sensor platform twice the size of a baseball, the G-Cam is usually thrown into an unknown area. Its reinforced casing is strong enough to survive a 20-meter fall, and its shape ensures that it will eventually stop rolling. Multiple sensor apertures enable the G-Cam to obtain 3-dimensional images of an area. Image link comes standard, and extra sensor options can be added.

Mage Sight Goggles

These heavy goggles are connected to a myomeric rope wrapped around a fiber-optic cable that ends in an optical lens. The rope is available in lengths of 10, 20, or 30 meters and allows spellcasters to gain line of sight while still out of sight.

Monocle

A monocle is worn on a headband or helmet with a flip-down arm, or (for the old-fashioned look) on a chain. The chain version has a smart adhesive, so you don’t have to squint all the time to hold it in place.

Periscope

An L-shaped tube with two mirrors, the periscope allows the user to look, shoot, or cast spells around corners.

Periscope Cam

An inexpensive, hand-held sensor package used to look around corners or over top of obstacles. Image link is standard, and it comes with limited upgrading capabilities. It can be accessed wirelessly or viewed directly through a small viewfinder at the base.

ProCam

ProCams are larger, higher-end cameras than most shadowrunners use, ideal for professional camera work. These are larger, shoulder-mounted or built into drones, quite impossible to hide but able to be absolutely stuffed with high-end optics. They can be found at any major event but are typically attached to a cameraman in the wake of a roving on-scene reporter.

Telescoping Mirror on a Stick

Approximately the size of a human hand, the MOAS is perfect for covert around-the-corner surveillance when wireless or technological devices aren’t feasible. It comes with a 15-centimeter telescoping probe with magnetic clamp for extra length.

A number of options are available for installation in visual sensors and imaging devices, from contacts to cameras.

Flare Compensation

This protects you from blinding light as well as simple glare and reduces the penalty from flashing lights, like from a flash-pak.

Image Link

This lets you display visual information (text, pictures, movies, the current time, etc.) in your field of vision. This is usually done with AROs, but you can display pretty much whatever you want on it. You and your team can use it to share tactical and situational info in real time. An image link is what you need to truly “see” AR and participate in the modern world.

Low-Light Vision

This accessory allows you to see normally in light levels as low as starlight. It doesn’t help in total darkness, though.

Polychromic Lens (Contacts)

This feature can be added to contacts and allows an individual to change the apparent color and pattern of their eyes. The contacts can be changed via wireless connection to any appearance imaginable, though the resolution is not as precise as Retinal Duplication cyberware and cannot fool a biometric reader.

SmartCam

SmartCams are spun out of smartgun technology, focused on allowing the user to get a better shot of a scene, not a target. There are external add-on SmartCam attachments, but they’re getting harder to find as cameras with an internal SmartCam system have continued to grow in market share. With less computation needed than the ballistics needs of a smartlink, a SmartCam can be used with any DNI but work best with a datajack.

Smartlink

This is the vision accessory side of the smartgun system. The smartlink receives the range to various targets, ammunition level (and type), and offers a targeting dot wherever the gun is pointed if within the visual field of the user.

Thermographic Vision

This enhancement enables vision in the infrared spectrum, enabling you to see heat patterns. It’s a very practical way to spot living beings in areas of total darkness, to check if a motor or machine has been running lately, and so on.
