Phonics

I can recognise that a phoneme (sound) can be represented by many graphemes

Watch the video introducing our focus phoneme of the week.

Phonics Week 1 Tuesday.mp4

In your workbook, write as many words you can think of that include the phoneme.

Sort them into a table based on which grapheme make the sound.

This is an example of what your table might look like.

How many other words can you brainstorm?

Reading

I can make connections to the text by applying my own ideas in a similar format

Watch the story 'Give Bees a Chance' by Bethany Barton Give Bees a Chance: A Read Aloud with Miss Katie and Handley Regional Library

The story is about a character trying to convince his friend Edgar to change his mind about bees and 'give them a chance'.

In this activity, you are going to create a comic strip trying to convince someone to think differently about something they don't like.

You can print out a comic strip here or make your own with 8 sections.

See the video for an example.

Challenge

List 5 things from the book that bees do to help us.

Research 5 things that we could do to help bees.

Writing

I can understand point of view

Read the story Baa Baa Smart Sheep by Mark and Rowan Sommerset.

In this story Baa Baa was trying to convince Turkey to do something. What was it?

Do you agree that Turkey should eat the smarty tablets?

Write about your opinion. Remember to write in full sentences and include reasons for your thinking.

Challenge

List some reasons someone might use to disagree with you.

For example, if you listed reasons that explain why Turkey should eat the smarty tablets, what would someone that feels he shouldn’t eat the tablets say?

Education Live (optional)

Let's watch Education Live!

This will start at 10am each day. Don't worry if you miss it, you'll be able to re-watch it at anytime.

Maths

TENS Game - Card Piles

Pick your level.

Play for 5 - 10 minutes before your maths task.

You will need:

  • Deck of cards (remove picture cards)

  • Counters (lego, marbles, dried pasta, etc.)

  • Whiteboard and marker (or paper and a pencil)

  • A partner to play the game with you

1 Star TENS Challenge.MOV

Use 2 piles of cards, 1 red and 1 black with numbers 1 to 5.

Take 1 card from each pile and use the visuals on the card to determine the total of the two cards.

2 Star TENS Challenge.MOV

Use 2 piles of cards, 1 red and 1 black with numbers 1 to 10.

Turn 1 card from each pile and write the number on top of the card on a whiteboard.

Try to visualise the pattern on the cards to add them together.

Turn the cards back to check your answer. Write the number sentence to match.

3 Star TENS Challenge.mov

Use two piles of cards. 1 black and 1 red.

Turn 2 cards over and identify the larger number. Count back to the number on the smaller card to find the answer.

Your partner checks and repeats. Write a number sentence to match.

4 Star TENS Challenge.MOV

Use one deck of cards and counters. Play in pairs. Each person takes a card from the top of the pile and doubles the number.

The player with the highest double gets a counter.

Record the doubles on a whiteboard. Repeat and after 10 minutes the player with the most counters is the winner.

5 Star TENS Challenge.MOV

Use one deck and split cards into 2 piles. Each player takes a card from their pile and places it face up on the table at the same time. Players then add the two cards together and double the total.

Call out the answer as soon as you know it. The player who calls out the answer first explains their strategy and takes a counter. The winner is the player with the most counters.

I can identify and order Australian coins based on their appearance and value

You will need:

  • Australian coins or print these if you can't find any

au-n-208-australian-currency-notes-money-cut-outs_ver_2.pdf

Watch Miss Hamid introduce our topic and learn the value of Australian money.

Recognising and Describing Coins.mp4

Ask an adult before you start.

See if you can find one of each Australian coin - there are 6.

You might like to see if you can find some Australian money notes as well. (If you raid a money box remember to put everything back once you have finished.)

Order the coins from smallest to largest (remember the $1 is worth 100c).

Mix them up and see how quickly you can put them back in order.

If you've got notes:

Can you order the coins and notes from smallest to largest?

Play a game of Celebrity Head Coins.

Play with people in your family.

Person One is in. The others select a coin.

Person One asks questions about the appearance of the coin e.g.

  • “am I silver?”

  • “do I have an echidna on the front?”

  • "am I less than $1?" etc.

The others players answer the questions.

Person One can guess what coin it is after they have asked at least 3 questions about it.

Swap around so everyone can have a few turns or give everyone a coin to play at the same time.

Challenge

Money Clues

Watch Miss Hamid show you how to play.

Money Clues.mp4

Work with a partner or group of family members.

  • Take turns selecting a piece of money from the box (without anyone seeing)

  • Give clues about your money without telling anyone what it is.

      • Can you give clues that include subtractions from another amount e.g. if this money was taken away from $5 you would have $4 change.

  • Each clue you give before they correctly guess gives you a point.

  • But an incorrect guess gives the clue giver bonus points.

  • The person who guesses correctly gets a point.

  • See who has the most points after a few rounds.

Brain Break

Noodling Around

Will Mrs Khakh nail her noodle challenge?

BB Tuesday.mp4

You will need:

  • an uncooked stick of spaghetti

  • uncooked penne pasta

How many penne pasta shells can you pick up using the spaghetti in your mouth?

Good luck as you have a minute to win it!

Geography

I can list the natural and built features of a park

Watch the video to see the many ways parks are used.

Think about the different features that you can see in the parks from the video.

Think about parks that you have visited. Not all parks are playgrounds. What about National Parks?

Geography Natural & Built.Tuesday WK 1 MP4

List the natural and built features of parks on your worksheet or in your book.

Add other features of parks that you already know.
