The Indian Wars were a series of different battles/wars across the United States from 1847-1900. While members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints moved to Utah, and many did their best to make peace with the Natives, wars and battles still accrued. Most of these wars and battles in Utah and Cache Valley occurred between 1857-1864, ending after the Bear River Massacre.
After the construction of the Richmond Fort in 1860 and other forts in Cache Valley, the Territory of Utah created the Cache Military District on Oct 15, 1861 with Church Apostle Ezra T. Benson as Colonel. Richmond was organized as the 5th Battalion Infantry, with Thomas L. Whittle as Major, David P. Rainy as Adjutant, and Robert M. Kerr and Dana Walton as Captains.1.1 Individuals who were a part of this Infantry are labeled with a star (⭐).
On June 16, 1863, Richmond was organized into two companies of Infantry and two squads of Cavalry.1.2
Infatnry
Each company of the Infantry had five squads of 10. Individuals who were a part of this Infantry are labeled with a sun (☀️).
Company K: Thomas L. Whittle, Captain; William T. VanNoy, Adjutant.
Company L: Dana Walton, Captain; Andrew J. Walton, Adjutant.
Cavalry
Each team of the Cavalry had two squads of 7-9. Individuals who were a part of this Cavalry are labeled with a horse (🐴).
Team 3: Christian Hyer, Lieutenant; William D. Henricks, Sargent.
Team 4: Vincent Cooper, Lieutenant; Herchel Bullen, Sargent.
On Sept 14, 1864, the Richmond Home Guard was established with Henry Standage as its Captain. At any cost, the city Guard was to protect. Most of the Guard consisted of Minute-Men.2 They had regular drills every night. The Home Guard was released from active duty on Oct 25, 1864. Members of this Home Guard are labeled with a house (🏠).
