Robert Gregory was born Nov 30, 1826 in Pitmanister, England to John and Elizabeth Sylvester Gregory. Robert Gregory is a Pioneer of Cove.
The Gregory family lived in poverty for most of Robert's childhood. Robert only had one year of schooling due to their low income. At age 16, Robert began working lime rock quarry where he taught himself how to read and write.
Sometime in June of 1850, Missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints were preaching in North Newton, England. Robert and his friend George Eveleigh attended the meeting, and another two weeks later. Robert loved the principles the Missionaries preached and was baptized on June 17, 1850, the following Wednesday.
To afford to move west and join the other Saints in Utah, Robert received a job in Plymouth, England, and then moved to Cornwall, England, where he worked for two or three years. While there, he converted six people to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, one in particular being a young girl named Mary Grace Stevens. Robert and Mary were married on November 12, 1854, in Stoke Damerel, England.
By 1862, the Gregory family finally had the means to travel west. They sailed on the Antarctic on May 18, 1862 and arrived in New York City, New York on June 27. They arrived in Florence, Nebraska Territory by steamboat and train, and joined the Horton D. Haight Company on Aug 10, 1862. During the travel, Mary became very sick and died in Fort Laramie, Wyoming on Sep 15. In October, Robert began his trek again to Utah and arrived in the Salt Lake Valley on Oct 19, 1862.
After his arrival, an old friend of his, John Doney, persuaded Robert to move to Franklin, Idaho. He arrived on Nov 15, 1862. Robert met Selena Marshall in Franklin, and they were married on Jan 2, 1863 in Franklin, Idaho. They first lived in a dugout before Robert built a home. According to family histories, this house was the first in Franklin and probably the first in the whole state of Idaho.
In 1871, the Gregory family purchased a farm in Cove and moved to their farm.
While in Franklin, Robert was enrolled in the Home Guard under the command of Captain William Whitehead. He served from Sep 14, 1864 to Oct 20.2
Robert's grandaughter recalls Robert's last moments.
"On December 27, 1900 he went to the church house and paid his tithing of $100. Bishop J. O. Larsen was making a comment on his honesty in paying his tithing and also toward his fellowmen and Grandfather said he didn't owe any man and now he was straight with the Lord. He said 'I am going now to visit all my children.' They had a family of 13. He started that evening to make his visits by making the first with his daughter Sarah Porter at Mapleton, Idaho. He arrived there that evening and died during the night at the age of 74."
Robert Gregory died Dec 28, 1900 in Mapleton, Idaho. He was buried in the Franklin, Idaho Cemetery.
