John Nelson Hendricks was born Jan 20, 1847 in Red River, Louisiana to Alln and Elizabeth Reed Lewis. John was a veteran of the Indian Wars.
Soon after Samuel was born, his family began to move to California to find gold. Just before they left, Samuel's mother died in Nebraska Territory from Cholera on June 12, 1850. Exactly one month later, Samuel's father died in Wyoming from the same disease, leaving Samuel and his younger brother, Samuel Allen, orphans at only two and a half years old.
Through help on the trails, the Hendricks made their way to the Salt Lake Valley. John was adopted by the Hyde family, and later the Holmes family. After some time, John was able to live independently.
John married Emily Minnie Jarvis on March 5, 1884 in Richmond. The Hendricks family lived in Idaho, Richmond, and Logan.
Between 1865-1868, battles between Native Americans and Pioneers were fierce in Sanpete Valley, Utah. On Oct 1, 1866, John enlisted on a march to assist the Pioneers. He was honorably released on Nov 30, 1866.1
In 1897, John and his brother Samuel began working in Mexico constructing railroads. After his brother's death in 1890, John took over his brother's responsibilities. In 1902, John had surgery to remove cancer from his leg, but it was unsuccessful. John Nelson Hendricks died March 20, 1904 in Rorreon, Mexico from the cancer. He was buried near the Lerdo Hospital, Reorreon, Mexico.
