Samuel Allen Hendricks was born Dec 22, 1848 in Red River, Louisiana to Allen and Elizabeth Reed Lewis. Samuel is a Pioneer of Richmond. Samuel is the father of Samuel Walstein Hendricks.
Soon after Samuel was born, his family began to move to California to find gold. Just before they left, Samuel's mother died in Nebraska Territory from Cholera on June 12, 1850. Exactly one month later, Samuel's father died in Wyoming from the same disease, leaving Samuel and his older brother John Nelson orphans at only a year and a half years old.
Samuel's uncle Josiah Hendricks picked up Samuel and his siblings and moved them to the Salt Lake Valley. Samuel was passed on to his aunt, Rebecca Hendricks, and her husband, Neriah Lewis, in 1851. The Lewis family lived in the Salt Lake Valley until 1854 when they moved to Harriman, Utah. They lived in Harriman until 1860 when they were invited by Samuel's cousin, William Hendricks Lewis, to move to Richmond.
"During this period the Utah Pioneers went through very perilous times and most of the people were poor having very little of this world's goods and the Lewis' were no exception. One of the tasks that was assigned to father more than any of the others was that of herding sheep, he did this from early spring to late in the fall when the ground was frozen and it was very severe on bare feet. His sister told the story of him during this period. She said that for some time they hadn't seen each other. She saw a bare footed, scantily clad dirty little boy herding sheep and when she got closer to him found out it was her brother.
"Later in life father said he did not want any of his children to ever have to herd sheep and as far as I know none ever have."
In 1864, Samuel joined a freight company to work in Butte, Montana. He would work in the summer and return home to Richmond during the winter, living with William D. Hendricks. During his time home, Samuel began associating with William's daughter Eliza Abigail Hendricks. They were married on Nov 13, 1871 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
After his marriage, Samuel began working in the railroading industry with Herschel Bullen from 1875-1880. In 1883, Samuel was able to build a large home from his family located on the corner of the Lafayette & Elizabeth W. Hendricks Home.
Samuel married Eliza Abigail Hendricks on Nov 13, 1871 in Salt Lake City, Utah. They had 10 children together with only seven living to adulthood. Some prominent family members are:
Samuel Walstein Hendrick, their oldest child, served in the Richmond City Council from 1897-1899 and later the 12th Mayor of Richmond from 1912-1914.
LaFayette Hendricks, their seventh child, also served in the Richmond City Council from 1916-1920. LaFayette's home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Samuel's grandson, Samuel Milton Webb, from his daughter Cora Jane Hendricks, has a home listed in the Nation Register of Historic Places.
After Eliza's death in 1893, Samuel remarried to Caroline Isaacson on Feb 28, 1895 in Logan, Utah. They only had one child that did not live to adulthood. In 1899, Caroline died.
While working on a railroad in Mexico, Samuel died June 26, 1900 in Papasquiaro. He was buried in the Santiago Papasquiaro, Mexico Cemetery.
