Herschel Bullen Sr. was born Jan 10, 1840 in Mercer, Maine to Newell Francis Ebenezer and Clarissa Judkins Atkinson Bullen. Herschel is a Pioneer of Richmond. Herschel is a veteran of the Indian Wars. Herschel is the father of Herschel Bullen Jr.
Hershel was the oldest child of the Bullen family. The Bullen family converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1848, and the family traveled to the Salt Lake Valley by boat on the Brooklyn, going from New York City, New York to San Francisco, California. The family moved to the Salt Lake Valley in 1848.
In 1858, at the age of 18, Hershel's father died, taking on much responsibility for the family. In 1861, Hershel took a scouting journey to Cache Valley and moved the Bullen family to Richmond in 1862.
"Herschel’s first house was a two-room, dirt roof, log cabin located on 50 South 100 East, comprising one-fourth of a city block and affording ample room for a lawn, orchard, garden, farm buildings, and corrals. His first farm was purchased by Warranty Deed from Ariah C. Brower on May 3, 1852 and covered 35 and ½ acres of choice irrigated land. It was about 100 rods south of the present North Cache High School on the County Road."1
After the construction of the Richmond Fort in 1860 and other forts in Cache Valley, the Territory of Utah created the Cache Military District on Oct 15, 1861 with Church Apostle Ezra T. Benson as Colonel. Richmond was organized as the 5th Battalion Infantry, with Thomas L. Whittle as Major, David P. Rainy as Adjutant, and Robert M. Kerr and Dana Walton as Captains. On June 16, 1863, Richmond was organized into two companies of Infantry and two squads of Cavalry. Hershel was appointed a Private in both instances, and a Sargent of the Cavalry.
On Sep 14, 1864, Herschel Bullen was enrolled in a company of Captain Thomas Winn. They marched to Franklin, Idaho and were in battle the same day. They were released from active duty on Oct 25, 1864.2
Herschel Bullen had three wives, none at the same time in the practice of polygamy.
Lydia Malinda Knapp: Herschel married Lydia on March 28, 1868 in Farmington, Utah. They had one child, Lorenzo H. Bullen. Their relationship ended in divorce.
Emma Boston Gibbs: Herschel married Emma on Feb 8, 1870 in Salt Lake City, Utah. They had two children, Herschel Bullen Jr. and Nellie Bullen. Emma died in 1873.
Mary Josephine Whittle: Herschel married Mary on Dec 20, 1876 in Logan, Utah. They had eight children: Roy, Pearl, Cyrus, Emma, Asa, Bryant, and Edith.
Herschel Bullen died June 27, 1910 in his home in Richmond due to "sever stomach pain." He was buried in the Richmond Cemetery.
