John Barnett

John Barnett was born May 6, 1819 in Wednesbury, England to Thomas and Sarah Adams Barnett. John is a Pioneer of Richmond. John is a veteran of the Indian Wars.

History

The early history of John is unknown. John married Eliza Cranage on July 1, 1839 in Aston Juxta Birmingham, England. By 1841, John was working as a "roller." This job was acquired through apprenticeships, and skills of craftsmen, not common laborers. By 1845, the Barnett family moved to Birmingham, England.

The Barnett family was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day in January 1850. 

"When [Grandmother Eliza] was investigating the Doctrines of Mormonism, she became very much interested in the scriptures and would often get out her Bible to read and explain to her husband the things she had heard the Momon Elders talk of the meetings she had attended.

"My mother Emma then a child would slip out at night to hear the Elders who were in the neighborhood, and to whom her father was very much opposed; however he also became converted and joined the church."3

Soon after, they began preparations to move to the United States to live among the other Saints. The Barnett family sailed on the Siddons on Feb 27, 1855 from Liverpool and arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 22.

The Barnett family stayed in Philadelphia in order to have the means to move west. They made the means by 1860, and joined the Jesse Murphy Company on June 19, arriving in the Salt Lake Valley on Aug 30. They lived in Salt Lake City until 1863, when they moved to Richmond, where his daughter Emma Lois and son-in-law Joseph Write were living.2

After the construction of the Richmond Fort in 1860 and other forts in Cache Valley, the Territory of Utah created the Cache Military District on Oct 15, 1861 with Church Apostle Ezra T. Benson as Colonel. On June 16, 1863, Richmond was organized into two companies of Infantry and two squads of Cavalry. John was appointed Private in 1863.
