William Handy was born July 30, 1842 in Stratford on Avon, England to Samuel and Hannah Rebecca Watts Handy. William was a veteran of the Indian Wars.
Just before Williams' 11th birthday, the Handy family joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1853. They imigrated to the United State the same year, and joined the James Brown company to cross the plains. It is not sure when the Handy family moved to Cache Valley.
After the construction of the Richmond Fort in 1860 and other forts in Cache Valley, the Territory of Utah created the Cache Military District on Oct 15, 1861 with Church Apostle Ezra T. Benson as Colonel. On June 16, 1863, Richmond was organized into two infantry companies. William served as a Private.
Soon after their service, the Handy family moved away from Richmond. William Handy died Sep 4, 1919 in Whitney, Idaho. He was buried in the Franklin, Idaho Cemetery.
