Charles Hopkins Allen was born Oct 15, 1830, in Burton, New York to Andrew Lee and Clarinda Knapp Allen. Charles is a Pioneer of Richmond and Cove. Charles is a veteran of the Indian Wars. Charles served as the first Branch President of the Cove Ward.
On Sep 22, 1843, at the age of 12, Charles joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In 1838, the Allen family moved to Kirtland, Ohio, and then in 1842 to Nauvoo, Illinois. After the assassination of Church President Joseph Smith, Charles took on many odd jobs to help support his family.
The Allen family joined the John S. Gibee/James W. Bay Company on May 28, 1852 and arrived in the Salt Lake Valley on Aug 13. Soon after, the Allen family moved to Provo, Utah, and secured jobs. In 1853, President Brigham Young sent Charles with a militia to Fort Bridger in Wyoming to arrest Jim Bridger for selling alcohol to Native Americans. After Jim fled, the militia built their own fort, Fort Supply. How long Charles was with this team is unknown.
After his return, Charles worked with the Church to freight from 1853 to 1863. Charles married Elizabeth Adelaide Hoopes on Jan 1, 1864 in Logan, Utah. Soon after their marriage, Charles moved to Richmond.
After the construction of the Richmond Fort in 1860 and other forts in Cache Valley, the Territory of Utah created the Cache Military District on Oct 15, 1861 with Church Apostle Ezra T. Benson as Colonel. On June 16, 1863, Richmond was organized into two companies of Infantry and two squads of Cavalry. Charles was appointed a Private in 1863.
In 1873, the Allen family moved to Cove. In 1877, Charles was sustained as the Branch President of the Cove Ward and was released in 1882.
In 1882, Charles developed rheumatism, and relocated his family to Mesa, Arizona.
