In 1847, the Allsop family was converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. John joined an unknown company the same year, and Mary Ellen Wood, a friend of John and Susannah, who was on the same ship they sailed on to immigrate to America. John and Mary were married on Sep 12, 1854 in Rawlins, Wyoming, during their trek.

After the construction of the Richmond Fort in 1860 and other forts in Cache Valley, the Territory of Utah created the Cache Military District on Oct 15, 1861 with Church Apostle Ezra T. Benson as Colonel. Richmond was organized as the 5th Battalion Infantry, with Thomas L. Whittle as Major, David P. Rainy as Adjutant, and Robert M. Kerr and Dana Walton as Captains. On June 16, 1863, Richmond was organized into two companies of Infantry and two squads of Cavalry. John was appointed as a Private in both instances.

"I remember him as a very clean distinguished-looking man. He worked in the Sunday School and made a most pleasing appearance as a presiding officer. He stood for what was right and looked all that he stood for."
