Marcus Espersen Funk was born Dec 3, 1842 in Pedersker, Denmark to Diderik Espersen and Kirstine Madsatter Funk. Marcus is a Pioneer of Richmond. Marcus is a veteran of the Indian Wars.
Marcus and Funk family joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1857 when he was 14 years old. He sailed on the U.S.S Tuscarora and lived in Iowa for two years until the family could obtain the means to travel west. The family joined the James Browns Company and arrived in Salt Lake City, Utah in Aug 1859. They following year, the Funk family moved to Richmond to settle and obtain land to live. Marcus was 18 when he arrived in Richmond.
In 1864, Marcus was asked to assist immigrants crossing the plains in the William B. Preston Company. While assisting, he met Magdalene Westenskow of Denmark. They were married in 1864 in Manti and lived in Richmond. Together hey had five children.
After the construction of the Richmond Fort in 1860 and other forts in Cache Valley, the Territory of Utah created the Cache Military District on Oct 15, 1861 with Church Apostle Ezra T. Benson as Colonel. On June 16, 1863, Richmond was organized into two companies of Infantry and two squads of Cavalry. Marcus was appointed as a Private.
Marcus was called to help settle part of southern Utah. After some time, Marcus moved to Trenton, Utah and lived the rest of his life. Marcus Espersen Funk died Nov 19, 1926 in Trenton, Utah. He was buried in the Trenton Cemetery.
