William McCarrey was born Feb 12, 1832 in Peel, Isle of Man, United Kingdom to James and Catherine Crane McCarrey. William is a Pioneer of Richmond. William was a veteran of the Indian Wars.
The early history of William is unknown. On June 1, 1853, while not a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, William joined the David Wilkin Company. It is not clear as to why he joined the company. While crossing with the company, William became converted to the Church and was baptized on the plains.
In 1860, William moved to Richmond where he was set apart as a member of the Seventy in 1861. The same year, William was called as a member of the Nauvoo Legion to Johnston's army to prepare the state for the Civil War. It is not clear if William ever saw any action from this.
On July 24, 1864, William married Hannah Melissa Hoopes in Richmond.
After the construction of the Richmond Fort in 1860 and other forts in Cache Valley, the Territory of Utah created the Cache Military District on Oct 15, 1861 with Church Apostle Ezra T. Benson as Colonel. On June 16, 1863, Richmond was organized into two companies of Infantry and two squads of Cavalry. William was appointed as a Private.
On Sep 14, 1864, the Richmond Home Guard was established with Henry Standage as its Captain. At any cost, the city Guard was to protect. Most of the Guard, including William, consisted of Minute-Men. They had regular drills every night.1 The Home Guard was released from active duty on Oct 25, 1864.2
Years before his death, William was diagnose with shaking palsy. William McCarrey died Nov 25, 1904 from pneumonia in Richmond. He was buried in the Richmond Cemetery.
