Isaac Monroe Shepard was born Sep 2, 1806 in Meridian, Connecticut to Obediah and Mary Yeomans Shepard. Isaac is a Founder of Richmond. Isaac was a veteran of the Indian Wars.
The early history of Isaac is unknown, except for the fact that the Shepard family moved from Connecticut to New York State. Isaac married Sarah Lackore on July 25, 1825 in Champion, New York. After their marriage, the Shepard family moved across the state of New York.1
On March 17, 1834, the Shepard family joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They soon moved from New York and joined the Saints in Ohio and Illinois.
During this time, Sarah died on May 7, 1847. Soon after, Isaac married Eleanor Jane Davis on Feb 1, 1848. The exact company the Shepard family joined to cross the plains is unknown. They arrived in the Salt Lake Valley in 1848.
After their arrival, the Shepard family moved to Farmington, Utah. Isaac and his children settled near a canyon and began working on gathering lumber. This association, the canyon and creek from the canyon were named after them, Shepard Canyon and Shepard Creek, Farmington, Utah.1 Shepard Park5 and Shepard Street4 in Farmington are also named after the family. On April 6, 1855, Isaac was called to serve a mission to Salmon River, Idaho, as a member of the Seventy.
Isaac entered the practice of polygamy on Nov 17, 1851 by marrying Anna Maria Adams in Salt Lake City, Utah. In 1859, the Shepard family moved to Richmond. They lived in the "Old Fort" and had one of the four original log homes in the fort. The home was large and had a wooden floor, which they could use as a meeting place.1
After the construction of the Richmond Fort in 1860 and other forts in Cache Valley, the Territory of Utah created the Cache Military District on Oct 15, 1861 with Church Apostle Ezra T. Benson as Colonel. Richmond was organized as the 5th Battalion Infantry, with Thomas L. Whittle as Major, David P. Rainy as Adjutant, and Robert M. Kerr and Dana Walton as Captains. Isaac was appointed as a Private.
In 1867, Isaac decided he was going to move to California. While traveling from California, Isaac Shepard died on Sept 8, 1867 in Austin, Nevada, from a sickness. Isaac's son, Justin, journeyed to Nevada to retrieve the body and bury it in the Richmond Cemetery.3
