Before Joseph was born, the Johansen family was converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The Johansen family began the trek to Utah in 1862. The Johansen family made there way to Liverpool and joined the Franklin on April 15, 1862 and arrived in New York City, New York on May 29.2 The Johansen family journeyed to Florence, Nebraska Territory and joined the John Riggs Murdock Company on July 24, 1862 and arrived in the Salt Lake Valley on Sep 27. "We wintered at the second ward at Salt Lake City in 1862. In 1863, we started for Cache Valley (Richmond), which was then built into what was called the Indian Fort. There were two strings of buildings about one half-mile long and 10 rod streets between and a large corral that was built out of logs to hold the cattle at night.
"In 1867, when I was 15 years old, I stood guard at nights to help protect the people from Indians that were on the warpath. They were from Franklin, Idaho, just 6 miles north of Richmond, with old chief Wosekey Band, about 500 warriors. All the men and boys were called out and the older men and boys stayed at home to fight. I stood guard at night and carried the old musket loaded with buck shot bullets."
Joseph Johnson died July 5, 1931 in Victor, Idaho. He was buried in the Victor, Idaho Cemetery.
