Marriage and Divorce
Scriptures eulogise it as a sacrament
A union with lifelong commitment
To enter one was free
But there was no out-door to flee
For the whole life to each other they must belong
Through the vagaries of times together they have to move along
This good law lasted for long
Only in the modern times we found it to be wrong
“What if things don’t go as per my plan
Why should then I suffer for the full life span
When the other is hell
Then together why should I dwell
So, give me a slit to slip out”
Law said, “To what you propose though I have my doubt
Yet take it if you insist; but out before you move
The other’s guilt you must prove”
Then there was a demand to make it free of proof and debate
“Why should law approve when we have decided to separate”
Law then agreed to introduce divorce by consent
With just a role of recordation the court must then be content
Soon people will say “why wait for other’s consent
When notice of divorce I have already sent
I have spoken divorce
So, my marriage is no longer in force”
For marriage indeed you need two
But for divorce just one would do
When this circle is complete
Would marriage itself not become obsolete?
Why give it a form
When just to live-in becomes the new norm
You are free to move in and out
And also to wander about
Liberation from bondage we will indeed attain
But with that the institution of marriage goes down the drain
Without divorce for millennia the society did thrive
With divorce for how long would it survive?
