Video of Helicopter Game Play
(Thank you to L&CD for sharing their resource)
Type: Team Building
Logistics Required: Helicopter prop located at the games store/cupboard at the various campsites [One wheel with strings attached and six blocks]; 2 x Games Rope; Random items to create an obstacle course (optional)
Objective: To transport six blocks using a wheel with a dangling hook and strings to a designated end location selected by the instructor. Similar to Bull Ring activity.
Instructions:
Use one games rope and form a circle to demarcate a starting area. Place the six blocks in the centre of the circle. The second games rope to also form a circle and be placed a distance away to signify where the blocks should end up.
Participants to hold the end of the strings on the wheel. If there are not enough strings, instructors can connect more strings. There are usually a few more additional strings in the set, if not instructors may also use twine.
Optional: Place random items (e.g. hula hoops, rubber rings, cones) to set an obstacle course.
Rules:
The participants are to only use one hand when pulling the string. The other hand can be behind the back.
Once the strings are taut, the strings must never touch the ground until the end of the activity.
Participants are to hook the blocks using the dangling hook on the wheel and to transport and unhook it onto the ending circle.
Participants are not to enter the demarcated areas. If they do, they must restart the game. Instructor can decide if they start from the top or if any blocks transported successfully can still remain in the ending circle.
Variations:
Instead of just transporting blocks to the ending circle. You can get the participants to stack the blocks into a pyramid shape in the ending circle.
You can get the participants to use their non-master hand.
You can stop verbal communication.
You can have some members be blindfolded throughout the game.
You can also have all players blindfold one eye. This distorts the perception of depth and is a challenge when retrieving the blocks.
If you create an obstacle course, you can reset the game whenever they touch any of the obstacle course items.
