Below is a combination of Life Run and the Privilege Race, contributed by Judah in 2019 on Workplace
Station 0 - hold and dispatch (moodset on the solemn and solo nature of this activity; reduce conversation by using sign board to write down instructions); engage in mindfulness activity like counting breaths to help participant connect with themselves and reduce chatter. Dispatch them one by one (at about 20s interval)
Station 1 - most instagrammable moment in the camp (highs and lows, and learning). Instruction sheet was pasted up, with 2 further “empty boards” pasted for pax to publish their reflections in post-it
Station 2 - peer affirmation. Choose 3 pax whom you would like to affirm about
Station 3 - privilege race. This is the final station of the life run, and culminated nicely toward commitment.
- check in with their mental state after getting through stations 0-2; point out that this is the race of life. Visual aid employed by pasting a “prize” sign at the end. In this case, we communicated that the prize is a packet of ice.
- Line the pax, and then present the caveat: if their answer is yes to any of the questions, take one big step forward:
1. Anyone has maid at home
2. Anyone has car at home
3. Anyone been to 2 countries in the last 2 years
4. Anyone has had the opportunity to go for enrichment classes as a kid
5. Anyone has parents who are always available to have dinner together as a family
6. Anyone has parents who praise and affirm them, and tell them that they can achieve anything in life as Long as they believe
- the whole idea is to create a spread out group (note: pax will inevitably began jibing and making comments like - that guy like so long, can gain a lot of advantage etc. Let them be, the contrast between this and the subsequent seriousness was good for moodsetting)
- Once the spread is good, switch on the solemn mood by pointing out about the privileges (the headstart given)
- Close it up by pointing out that those who are behind are strong and given an opportunity to strive, and that they are capable to overcome the deficit
- Start the race
- Gather everyone in a circle for debrief (the guy with the most advantage usually wins the race)
- Debrief by pointing out once again the prestige, the hard work and the overcoming of deficit
- The one with more should help the one with less; the one with less can be very proud of themselves because they overcome the deficit (completing the same camp) and potentially had achieved even more.
- Round off with the song “standby me”
The materials from station 1 and 2 can then be used for final debrief.
Ronny and I had wanted to create a commitment that translates into an attitude of service even after OBS, and we are heartened and glad that in the goal-setting portion of the Eval, we saw exactly that. 🙂
