"Hi friends! Welcome to the island of Montunui. Let me introduce to you this beautiful island we call home." This was how Faris and I started our MOE-OBS course on 19 Nov 2018.
• How did the Moana framing came about?
I started toying with the idea when Joshua was talking about how the "dying" Ubin due to many trees falling during the storm resembled the dying coconut trees of Montunui. When i proposed the idea to Faris, it turned out that he is a huge fan of Moana! 😊
• How was the framing like?
Moana: Salome
Maui: Faris
Montunui: Ubin
Chief Tui's office: Ops Room
Name of Mobile: C2 Voyagers
Props made / used: Magical fishhook, Moana's skirt, Chicken that made sounds (Hei Hei), a marbled heart (Heart of Te Fiti), 3 Flags (1 for each rowboat)
<DAY 1>
Rowboat Orientation: Starting their journey as wayfinders
<Day 2>
"Maui lost his magic giant fishhook! We need to find it back for him. He recalls it being somewhere near Camp 1."
Alpine Rescue (Moana): "I think the fishhook is nearby! But the land beneath us suddenly shifted, we got split up and there's lava everywhere. We need to get everyone across to the last platform safely in time before the fishhook flies away again!"
TCM (Maui): "i think the fishhook is nearby! But we need to get the clue by finding things in the tunnel. You need to help me cos i dont have my magical fishhook so im scared of everything, including the dark."
Indiana Climb: "The magical fishhook landed onto the ship and broke into pieces! Retrieve the pieces stuck on the futtocks and assemble the magical giant fishhook."
We debriefed about how the 21 pieces represented each of them and how important it was for everyone to play their part in completing the picture and making the magic happen. We also talked about the people who form the picture of our lives.
<Day 3>
Land expedition (Moana): "Hei hei died! Something wrong is happening to the island and we need to check on how our villagers and wildlife is doing."
Moana headed to Chek Jawa and also visited the headman house to talk to the ahma and her grandson.
Land expedition (Maui): Maui headed to Puaka hill to place his stone and got to know the island abit better.
<Day 4>
Rowboat expedition: "Tamatoa, the greedy coconut crab, stole the heart of Te Fiti and dropped it into the sea thinking it was trash! We need to find it and return it back to Te Fiti. Te Fiti stays on this island called Sekudu and transformed into a stone frog when her heart got stolen. We gotta pick up whatever trash we find cos you never know, one of it might contain the heart of Te Fiti!"
We had to turn around at the bay after Ubin Village due to lack of time so we made a turn of events....
"Have you guys found the heart yet? If no, then there's no point going to Sekudu. Let's go Ketam island to find Tamatoa and ask him where he threw the heart. Maybe we will have a better chance in finding it then."
We dropped a water bottle containing the marbled heart alongside Ketam island for them to pick it up. We concluded the expedition by sharing with them that the most powerful thing is what's inside them, just like the heart of Te Fiti. And for this expedition, the spirit of resilience in them was their source of power.
<Day 5>
Closing ceremony: We got them to fall in at C2 pontoon and thanked them for all the help they have given to the village of Montunui. We then encouraged them to continue embarking on new voyages to discover more about themselves and others, just like how Moana did. To wish them all the best for their voyages ahead, we gave them their certs, pinned the boat pin onto their sleeves, and gave them the chance to say "I thank you for.." and "I wish you..".
Do share suggestions / feedback on how we can improve on it! Thanks for reading 😊
