Hi all, i’d like to share a framing i had this week for final debrief.
Before expedition, my participants were told that they would eventually need to create a magazine of pulau ubin to entice and guide others to come to pulau ubin. Hence, the expedition focused on places of interest and heritage.
On the final day, I told them that the magazine would also include some of the special memories, individual and group learnings, and whatever that best represents their entire journey in OBS so as to help others understand what was so awesome about OBS and their watch.
Total activity time: 2.5hr
- Designing the magazine: 1 h 15m
- Presenting the magazine: 15m
- Q & A session (final debrief): 1 h
- The Final Debrief -
The magazine was used as a tool for final debrief. I conducted it as a Q & A session based on the magazine they had just published. I pretended to be outsider who did not know them and asked questions to draw out their learnings also to understand how they would apply these to their real lives when they left OBS.
Some questions I asked:
- Why were these moments memorable? (questioning their experience)
- If you were to share some tips with those coming to OBS, what values/ qualities would they need to make their experience as fruitful as yours? (questioning their learnings)
- You guys seem to have some unforgettable memories and learnings here in Pulau Ubin.. I’m just curious how will these will be applied back in your life in Singapore? (questioning the transfer of learning to real life)
It was a refreshing experience to use the magazine as a final debriefing tool because the Q & A session set the stage for participants to share openly since it was not a formal debrief session. The mood of the final debrief was light-hearted, relaxed and full of laughter, with most being more than willing to share. Because they had already published their experience and learnings, it was also a lot easier to probe and double click on many of the learnings they shared. My participants really enjoyed the entire experience and so did I 🙂
