Get pax to line up their logistics, settle in and be comfortable at a cosy part of the park. Simple games or story telling about the Sembawang area can be carried out before the start of the Sembawang Park Learning Quest / Adventure Race.
This activity will take about 2 hours and the following materials are required:
The purpose of the the learning quest is to develop CONCERNED CITIZENRY in our participants through demonstration the following Attitude, Skills and Knowledge (ASK)
Every place that we camp at is unique and has its own very special story. Especially in land-scarce Singapore, there are only that limited number of spaces for us to camp. While you are here for the night, we want to challenge you to find out more about Sembawang.
Where else have you camped in Singapore?
In the places that you have camped, what interesting things have you discovered?
What is the significance of Sembawang? Why is it called Sembawang?
(At this point, show them the marked out maps with all the checkpoints.)
- This is a competition between two watches and it is a time-sensitive challenge.
Requirement 1: Complete the QUESTions!
(1) There are total of 24 checkpoints spread across three different routes in the park. Each checkpoint has a question that you must answer. The location on the map corresponds to the question number.
(2) Each route has varying level of difficulty. Red (Difficult), Blue (Moderate) and Yellow (Easy). You will be given time to plan and choose which route you want to take.
(3) Bonus questions are highlighted in yellow. These bonus questions require you to think deeper for an answer. If you can attempt them accurately, you add another point to the team.
Requirement 2: Present the 5-for-5 Presentation
(1) At the end of the challenge, the team must present a 5-for-5 Presentation. Based on the information that you have compiled from the Quest, you are to present five facts about Sembawang that you find meaningful and state the reasons why.
(2) Most exciting presentation wins! Is it important to explain why you decide to choose these five facts and why they are meaningful.
Planning Time
(1) Allow time for the watch to split into three groups.
(2) Hand out the three route maps and QUESTions to them and allow 10 mins for planning.
This is a competition so time is of the essence!
Within the watch, split yourselves into teams of three i.e. one watch will have three groups of about four persons each.
The Quest will be carried out in three intervals of 15 mins each. During each 15mins interval, only two groups from each watch are allowed to move off. There must always be one group remaining at the base from each watch.
There should be a minimum of 4 pax per group.
Each group can only bring one set of Route Map out.
The groups that travel out must return within 15mins. It is hence critical to appoint a timekeeper within the group members. Points will be deducted from the team if they fail to return within the time.
Do not destroy anything along the way. No flowers should be plucked unless it has already fallen onto the ground.
This is a public space. Please be considerate to other park users and do not be a noise and physical nuisance.
Optional: Between each 15mins interval, there can be a 1 min break for the team to consolidate their answers or to strategize or plan.
Variation of Rules:
To make it more exciting, instead of three 15mins interval, tier the time for each interval (e.g. 1st interval: 20mins, 2nd interval:15mins, 3rd interval:10mins)
There must be a minimum of four pax per group. Do not spilt up the group further. Every member within the group must be within sight of one another.
In the event of emergency, e.g. participant is injured, one person is to stay with the injured participant while the other two return to base camp and report to instructor.
DO NOT cross any roads. The activity area is strictly within Sembawang Park only.
Take note of the following areas/ specifics:
i. No climbing of trees.
ii. Do not enter the Dog Run area.
iii. Do not be a nuisance to other park-users.
There will be an instructor on rover around the park. If any rules are violated, points will be deducted from the team score.
Before the QUEST starts, remind the participant about the importance of returning to base by 15 mins! Identify the group members and timekeeper in each group.
An instructor is to move around the park as a rover to monitor safety.
The other instructor is to stay at base with the remaining group, and to ensure that the timing of the intervals are strictly adhered. Should any group not return within the stipulated times, rover instructor should look for them or comms them via walkies.
Base Instructor should also encourage the base groups to start planning and thinking about their 5-for-5 presentation as time is limited.
Optional: Base instructor can get base group to complete a simple activity to earn “clues” for the QUESTions. E.g. Ball Juggle, Traffic jam, Hang-Man, Wheel of Fortune etc. Refer to Annex: Interval Games.
Sharing of QUESTions
Share the answers including the additional information and fun facts with the participants. Refer to Answers.
Tally the scores for each group.
5-for-5 Presentation
Before the pax share their 5-for-5 presentation, instructor can share “Five things about Sembawang” with them first. After instructor sharing, you can consider giving the participants five mins to discuss whether they want to make changes or enhance their presentation.
2 Get participants to share their presentation and give points accordingly.
