Murray H. MacKenzie

Murray MacKenzie was born in 1913 in Winnipeg. He graduated from McGee Secondary School in Vancouver with honours in mathematics and served as a navigator with the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. Because of the depression of the 1930's, he did not attend university, but went to work for the E.L. Sauder Lumber Company, eventually marrying Claire Sauder. As the company grew into Interfor (International Forest Products Ltd.), he became its chair. In this capacity he travelled extensively, particularly in the Far East, and was one of the first people to become aware of the demise of old-growth forests. He was an avid golfer and a good pianist, with a preference for Chopin. He died in 1983. His daughter, Joan C. Forrester, is one of the directors of our Foundation.
