Margaret Crute McLeod

Margaret Constance Crute was born November 20 1919 on East 21st Street in North Vancouver and educated at Queen Mary and Lonsdale Elementary Schools and North Vancouver High School. After graduation in 1937, she majored in French at the University of British Columbia, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1941. In 1942, she joined the North Vancouver School District, teaching French, Spanish, German, English, and Journalism at Ridgeway, Sutherland, and North Vancouver High School. However, she took time out in 1952 to study French at the Sorbonne in Paris. In 1971, she left teaching to marry dentist Dr. Douglas McLeod.

Mrs. McLeod served on the board of the North Vancouver High School Education Foundation from 1986 to 1993 and she was a generous and frequent benefactor, donating a total of $26,475 between 1980 and 2000. In particular, she founded and helped maintain the Norman M. Crute Scholarship in memory of her brother and from 1987 to 1996, she funded two bursaries per year. When she died on April 18 2009, she left the Foundation a considerable portion of her estate.
