Jim Buchanan
James Buchanan was born in 1936. He completed high school in Squamish, where he excelled in most sports. After graduating from UBC with a degree in physical education in 1959, he taught two years in Quesnel before returning to UBC to complete his teacher's training. In 1962 he moved to North Vancouver as a PE teacher and counsellor at Handsworth. Eight years later he transferred to Carson Graham as administrative assistant and then vice-principal. During his years there he spent four summers completing his master's degree in education at Western Washington University. He was appointed principal of Argyle in 1976.
On December 6, 1986, Mr. Buchanan died suddenly of a heart attack. At the time of his death he had been married twenty-six years and was the father of two daughters and a son.
Mr. Buchanan was noteworthy for his keen interest in all aspects of school life and his pride in the achievements of his students and his staff.
