Gregory Quan

Greg Quan attended Maplewood Elementary School and Windsor Secondary School in North Vancouver, graduating in 1993. In May 1997 he graduated from Capilano University with a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Studies (Vocal Jazz). In August 1998 he completed his bachelor of Education (Secondary) degree at the University of British Columbia. In September 2003 he completed his Master of Arts degree in Music Education from UBC.

He is a dedicated and enthusiastic high school music teacher, first in Richmond, BC at R.C. Palmer Secondary and now in Vancouver, BC at Magee Secondary. He has a special relationship of mutual caring and respect with his students. Greg challenges young musicians to reach beyond their comfort levels and to expand their musical horizons and takes great pleasure in assisting them to achieve excellence in their chosen instruments. He enjoys arranging and composing music for his award winning choral and orchestral groups to perform.

Outside of the classroom, Greg has been involved with organizations such as the BC Choral Federation (director), BC Music Educators Association, Voicestream Youth Choir (founder and director), Richmond Youth Honour Choir (director), Bach Youth Choir and the Summer Pops Youth Orchestra. He shares his passion for music education through adjudicating festivals and presenting workshops for students and educators. He was nominated for UBC’s Alumni Teaching Excellence Award (2014), was one of the UBC Faculty of Education’s “100 in 100” (2015), and was the Capilano University’s Distinguished Alumni for 2016. In 2019 Greg was designated a UBC Faculty of Education Distinguished Alumni (2019). In 2021 the BC Music Educators' Association (BCMEA) granted him the Outstanding Professional Music Educator Award Secondary. He was named one of UBC's 2022 Alumni Builder Award recipients, representing the Faculty of Education.

Greg’s parents established this scholarship to recognize their son’s achievements and to honour young people who are passionate about music. They believe that the hard work and discipline needed to excel in music prepare students to attain their goals whatever they may be.
