Luke 8:49-56
Jesus Our Hope
49While Jesus was still speaking, someone came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue ruler. "Your daughter is dead," he said. "Don't bother the teacher any more."
50Hearing this, Jesus said to Jairus, "Don't be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed."
51When he arrived at the house of Jairus, he did not let anyone go in with him except Peter, John and James, and the child's father and mother. 52Meanwhile, all the people were wailing and mourning for her. "Stop wailing," Jesus said. "She is not dead but asleep."
53They laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. 54But he took her by the hand and said, "My child, get up!" 55Her spirit returned, and at once she stood up. Then Jesus told them to give her something to eat. 56Her parents were astonished, but he ordered them not to tell anyone what had happened.
All hope for their daughter has gone...A daughter has just died and her parents are crying...It is a time in their lives for hopelessness...The parents loved their daughter and now she has passed on...Jesus, who is divine, takes the deceased girl's hand and brings back her Spirit...He brings back her life...This is truly a miracle...
We are not told about the mother and father's reaction to this healing and miracle...But it must have been after so much negativity, hopelessness, and remorse, now the feelings of being overjoyed, positive, happy feelings and elated emotions...There also must have been shock over Jesus...How could a Man do something like this?...Who is this Man?...All He did was take the deceased daughter by the hand and gave her life (back)...The parents would probably have great feelings and great hope that Jesus is the Messiah...This scene and memory of His healing would never leave them, in their entire lives...The Healer has brought hope, great hope into the parent's lives...
Jesus has the ability to touch each of our lives...When He touched the lepers, the sick, the blind -they were healed...He is our Miracle Worker...Jesus had literally touched these two parent's lives... Jesus had touched death and turned death back into life...Jesus tells us we will have troubles in this world (John 16:33)...No doubt the father, the mother, the now living daughter would later in their lives have some troubles and sufferings...The daughter would die again, but she and her parents were given the hope of eternal life on this day that would remain with them...They were given something very great that day, maybe even greater than their daughter's life (back) -they were touched by Jesus in their lives...
They now knew Someone who has overcame this world and the troubles in it (John 16:33)...The believer's hope is anchored in Jesus...If you believe in Jesus, then hope never dies...Hope lives on forever, when we have and believe in Jesus...This does not make the days we are crying go away, but He is the One who says "Stop wailing."...Jesus gives us an eternal hope...
