Luke 10:38-42
38 As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. 40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”
41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
Martha is preoccupied with her work...And in this preoccupation with work she wants Jesus to call Mary out on her listening to Him at His feet...Instead of supporting Martha, Jesus tells her that her sister has chosen the right thing to do...Listening to Him and learning from Him, is the better thing to do, of almost ALL things, if not everything...Listening to Jesus is much better for us than work...
Martha seems to think that work is better than listening to the One who the Bible is all about...Interesting enough, I am like Martha...I put this importance on work...I feel that for some reason there is this importance in work and accomplishing things...If I were at Martha and Mary's house at the time Jesus was there, I might have been helping Martha, instead of listening and learning from my Master and Teacher...But Jesus doesn't say what Martha is doing a bad thing...He tells Martha that Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her...Martha may forget about the preparations that day that Jesus came, and maybe not...She will definitely not forget that Jesus was there...Mary will never forget what she has heard and learned from Him that day...
