Luke 10:25-28
Jesus on Interpreting the Law
25On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. "Teacher," he asked, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?"
26"What is written in the Law?" he replied. "How do you read it?" 27He answered: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind'; and, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'"
28"You have answered correctly," Jesus replied. "Do this and you will live."
Jesus asks one of the experts in the law, How does he interpret the law, specifically "How do you read it???...This leads one to believe that Jesus is telling us one, two or three things...One that there are more ways to read and interpret the first five books of the Bible, also known as the Law of Moses...He might even be telling us that they are different ways to interpret the whole Bible...Third Jesus, at the very least is telling us that people who read the law do interpret it differently than others...
When the one in question, gives his interpretation, Jesus agrees...If we love God, with all our heart, with all our soul, with all our strength, and with all our mind; and love our neighbors as ourselves, we have interpreted the Law of Moses correctly...
