Luke 10:38-42
Important Things in Life
38 As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. 40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”
41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
Sometimes when some of us were in high school we tried to excel...Sometimes we wanted to be popular in school...This went on and we tried to do well in college...The focus continued, as we got a job and tried to be the best at the job we now had...We get that great job, and buy a nice car and a nice house...There is nothing wrong in trying to do your best, and having things...And God wants you to do the best you can in your life...But we often think, that these things, these "many things" will bring us happiness...Having "many things" can keep us busy in this life and be our focal point...There are "many things" which get our attention in this life, and we think need done to make us happy or satisfy a desire...
Martha was very good at what she did...She may have been the best cook in the village...She may have had the cleanest house in her village...But Martha seems a little bit anxious over trying to get everything done, that she thought needed to be done...But when read our epitaph, does it seem important to have the cleanest house, or be number one in school and to be the most popular, or to have a big car?...At the end of day, in the choices we make, is it important to have the cleanest house?...When you get older or more mature, you might ask if there is something more important than house, a clean house, or being popular...Is there something else?...
Jesus reminds us of the important things in life...We have daily choices how to use the time we have each day...Martha made her choice, and Mary made her choice...Imagine to be able to sit at the feet of Jesus, and to listen to His perspective and teachings of life, and Him answering any question you have about Him, His Father, the Holy Spirit, life, and the eternities...To sit with God, and listening to this and His perspective -would have been much more important, much more cherished, so rewarding, so life fulfilling...
How comforting a thought to be at the feet of Jesus just listening to what He says...
